Honda's most famous car in the world is Civic. But now, Honda of Japan doesn't sell any. European Honda takes part in WTCC race with Civic hatchback, which has 1.6-liter turbo motor. Japanese car magazines say Honda will sell new Civic Type R next year and it will come with 1.6-liter turbo motor. The price might be $40,000 US. I think many people have image for Honda's motor is NA motor but in Europe, 1.6L turbo sports cars are very popular because the FIA's regulation approve their motors for WTCC and WRC (Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze take part in WTCC now.).
Honda Civic took part in races in Japan since 1975. Honda Civic One Make race series is very famous race in Japan which start from 1982. Honda Japan will not sell Honda Civic Type-R sedan (FD2) but Mugen still sell Honda Civic Type R race car (MUGEN RC), which is about $84,000 US. I know that is expensive but if you would buy it, you can take part in the CTR One Make race. The regulation of Civic One Make race says any Civic Type R race car must have only the racing parts approved by the organizer except coilovers, rims, brake pads, seat and steering wheel. The regulation says the organizer consider any Civic race car owner can do engine overhaul. The engine overhaul in the regulation for racing scene is very hard and we can see the mechanic's (or engine builder) skill. But driver's skill is very important for winning the race; that is purpose of Civic One Make race. If you think Civic Type R race car is slow, you are wrong. CTR race car can make same lap time on the race track as Skyline GT-R (R32) Group A race cars. By the way, EK9 Civic Type R for daily driving have same potential as 1985 Civic (EA-T) Group A race cars. Now Mugen is organizer of Civic One Make race because Honda doesn't sell CTR anymore. I think next year's race season will start with new CTR.
We can see CTR sedan race car and Euro-spec CTR race car at Super Taikyu (endurance) race. You check the race cars and can get some ideas for building your car. We can see Honda Civics versus Toyota 86 at the Super Taikyu racing scene because Honda and Toyota are going head-to-head racing now. Honda CR-Z versus Toyota Prius at Super GT race; Honda Fit versus Toyota Vitz( Yaris) at Super Taikyu race. I think that is good situation for making racing scene and sports car scene popular, and should make popular tuning scene for future.
But since Honda Japan will sell Civic Type R hatchback, Honda USA will only sell Civic coupe, which is no good for JDM and USDM culture in Japan and USA. I hope Honda will sell same Civic in Japan and USA (maybe sedan?) again. I guess tuning cultural exchange between Japan (USDM) and USA (JDM) is very important.
