2000 Honda Civic Si - Never Finished

They always come back...

True car enthusiasts are painfully transparent. Well known as creatures of habit, even after "calling it quits," the creative juices never really stop flowing. Whether it's a case of maximum boredom or the unfortunate loss of a project car, the urge to build is a constant threat. Funny thing is, they'll tell you with a straight face that they're done, they're moving on and never looking back, but like a bad poker player, they're far too easy to read. Innocent stock cars are quickly scanned up and down, then mentally picked apart and rebuilt almost systematically. Sure, true enthusiasts may take a break, but they never completely escape.

Travis Lippert is an enthusiast who lost his original Si to Mother Nature. "A storm that caused flooding in my area caught my Si, and it was totaled. I found this car, and it just started off as a daily driver." Content with just having a sporty coupe for his daily commute, Travis avoided any mods for almost an entire year before thoughts of a turbo setup began clouding his better judgment. After researching online, he'd found enough positive feedback on Full Race's turbo kit to take the plunge and purchase one of his own. After installing the kit on what was basically a stock engine, he ran into an issue with the block. Out came the engine in exchange for a new one, and just three weeks later, he experienced the same problem. Wanting to break the cycle, Travis contacted InlinePro at the advice of a friend. "I talked with them for a little bit, and the next day I made a trip up there to drop off an LS block (B16 head). Just three weeks later, everything was ready to be picked up and put back together. I contacted my friend Duong, who's been there every step of the way with the car since I first started modding it, and we talked about doing a wire tuck. The next day I was in his garage and he was finishing the tuck. The car was pretty much done, but I kept changing little things all the time."

Once he'd finally reached a point of satisfaction, Travis headed back to InlinePro for a proper dyno tuning session. He adds, "There's nothing like handing your keys and car over to somebody and pretty much telling them to whale on it! I sat there like a father waiting for his first born to come into the world. I sat out back, nervous, just listening to them do pull after pull." The wait was well worth it, as the InlinePro crew pulled over 460 whp at a mere 11 psi. Pushing the boost up to 15 psi resulted in over 500 whp though that came at the cost of traction, as the car began to spin the tires on the dyno. With the car tuned and ready to abuse, Travis admits to having an incredible ride back home. "I've never been so happy to drive it home. I didn't even turn the radio on one bit, I just listened to the sound of the motor and the turbo spooling up for 2.5 hours with the biggest shit-eatin' grin on my face!"

To get the exterior of the Si up to par with its ferocious powerplant, Travis jumped online and started his hunt for new parts. "I came across the rarest of rare parts, a matching Kevlar hood and trunk--the only ones I've seen and I've received tons of emails/PMs on the forums about where I got them and if I would sell them." To complement the bright yellow Kevlar thread, a call was made to Sage Auto, which sourced a Backyard Special bumper with its infamous Kevlar lip. Having gone through a number of CE28s in various colors and sizes, Travis eventually decided on a set of CCW Classics, and was content. That is, until he was talking with Dan of CCW who mentioned a new design was on the way at that time which led Travis to put the Classics up for sale immediately, making room for a brand-new set of LM16s. He adds, "After throwing the wheels on the car the first time, I knew they were meant to be there." While you won't find many cars in Honda Tuning Magazine sporting the low-offset style, Travis' EM1 is an exception. The main reason being, after swapping out the front wheels for a set of 22-inch slicks, he blasted a 10.96! Shortly after, he was kindly asked by track officials to shut his car down, and his track days were put on hold until he decides to add a cage to meet tech requirements.

In closing, he adds, "I stepped back and looked at what I've built, and it's even better than I had dreamed in my head. I got the car to sit and look the way I wanted." Oh, and that nice little 10-second timeslip doesn't hurt either. He may have taken a hiatus from the building process, but Travis Lippert never really left. In fact, he's just getting started.

The carbon-Kevlar hood and trunk lid aren’t very common--that serves Travis just fine.

How Did You Afford All Of That??

Travis reminds us that not everyone gets a handout, some of us have to work for it. He states, "Now I'm not a rich man. Money spent on the car has been paid for by doing it paycheck to paycheck, adding a little here and there. Being a member of the U.S. Air Force enlisted group doesn't pay that great, but it pays. I have mostly been able to support my taste for high-end parts due to being deployed almost every year for six months and saving as much as I can while I'm away. I remember getting calls from my dad the whole time I was building/putting the car together. He would say, 'How is that 30-thousand-dollar paperweight doing?' Once I got the car fully put back together, I took it for a road trip back to Oklahoma where I grew up. After a quick wash and wax, I told my dad, 'Hey, let's go for a ride.' I didn't even get it out of third before he was telling me to shut it down! Oh, what a joy. I told him my 30-thousand-dollar paperweight is doing me just fine now..."
