1995 Honda Civic EXs - The Coupe Bros.

Hobby, lifestyle, trouble deterrent

Trouble in the path of America's youth comes in all shapes and sizes. For some, it's all but inevitable, much of it based on an individual's surroundings, upbringing, and for some, following in those large footsteps from years past that have become rigid and weathered. Some, like brothers Juan and Diego Zarate, have sense enough to recognize when they're headed down the wrong path and can make the necessary adjustments to make things right again.

"Truth is, I wasn't in the market for a vehicle. Me and my friend Palemon were on our way to the store, and we spotted this red Civic with a 'for sale' sign. We didn't even stop, but little did we know, the road up ahead was closed. We turned around and decided to pull over because the car looked to be well taken care of." A few photos of the car along with the contact info, and Juan headed home to show his parents, who agreed the car looked very well maintained and, because it was a Honda, affordability was a given. Little deliberation was needed; the chance encounter sent Juan right back, and he purchased the one-owner EX and was on his way.

With it serving as his daily driver, Juan took pride in his coupe, but his feeling of responsibility ran deeper than just your basic wash, wax, and on-time oil changes. He explains, "Having this car and really enjoying the scene and the hobby kept me out of trouble. I had a couple of friends who went to juvenile hall, and I'm not trying to say anything bad about them, but this actually kept me away from that kind of trouble. I just felt like I had a bigger responsibility now and I couldn't let my parents down."

A mature outlook no doubt, but just like any kid in any corner of the world, temptation is sometimes a force far too great to ignore. A little over a year after taking ownership of the bright red Civic, Juan was in a car accident and admits that it was following a street race encounter. The event served as a slap in the face, a wake-up call, if you will. Masters Auto Collision was enlisted for the body repairs, and while the car was under the knife, Juan began hunting for a suitable heart for transplant. A complete GS-R swap was being sold locally, and he jumped at the deal. "Because of the swap, I learned a lot more about my car. It was supposed to be plug-and-play, but it had a lot of issues. Eventually I got it running, but I was bummed I had to spend more money when I really shouldn't have had to. I had to learn the hard way."

To complement the 1.8L upgrade, Juan added a CT Engineering intake, Skunk2 intake manifold and throttle body, and custom exhaust. Functional suspension, tastefully offset wheels, and minor tweaks to the exterior maintain an overall clean, user-friendly build that avoids the "trend of the month" club and instead focuses on classic longevity. In closing, he states, "My brother has always been my main help in the garage, he's really patient and knowledgeable. I try to drive the car as much as possible, but it's hard with all of the thieves out there, so it's become my weekend warrior. I'd like to keep this car and maybe one day my daughter can enjoy it as much as I do."

Diego Zarate

The first thing that draws you into Diego Zarate's Civic coupe is undoubtedly the paint. Based on a factory Mercedes SL color, the deep red tone is contrasted by aggressive, dark-colored Work Equip rollers. By most accounts, a car that looks as clean and mean as Diego's is inevitably packing a punch under the hood, right? Yes, and no. At one point in time, the space that now cradles a virtually stock D16 played host to a B-series swap. However, running into some hurdles along the way meant Diego had to make a tough choice. He adds, "After getting into some trouble with the law, I decided to pull the old engine out, and put back a stock D16 that I got from a friend. Ever since that time, I've just been staying out of trouble, cleaning up my driving record to be able to work in the automotive industry. At least it passes smog every time, and I don't have to worry about the cops popping my hood." No stranger to the ins and outs of the '92-'95 chassis, Diego says he's taken his car apart and put it back together countless times. Though some of the knowledge has been gained through homegrown, hands-on hard work, Diego has also spent the last few years attending Evergreen Valley College's Professional Automotive Career Training, or P.A.C.T. The program is dedicated to preparing students for dealership work, specifically with Honda/Acura, and even has support from American Honda, providing supplies, tools, and training materials for students to progress.

OK, so Diego's coupe doesn't have monster H or K swap sporting a high-power turbo kit, but what it does have is a carefully chosen array of upgrades throughout the chassis. From the Backyard Special lip and custom paint, to the GS-R brakes and well-armed street suspension. His is a car that represents a large portion of Honda Tuning loyalists-guys who have either swapped their stock engines back in to get through the dreaded smog requirements that seem to sneak up on us every few years, or those who simply haven't opted for a larger or more powerful engine setup. "Tuning" comes in all shapes and sizes, whether the focus is appearance, suspension, performance, or all of the above.

And about that B-series swap that was removed from the coupe; it's still in Diego's possession and he has plans to put it to good use. He states, "After I build it, it'll be going back into the coupe for show and track duty. It's going to be a whole new makeover with new paint, new wheels...everything."

Brothers Juan and Diego had a taste of trouble from the law, but both put themselves back on track with a little common sense, and a whole lot of love for building Hondas.

The Shed

Both Juan and Diego mention "The Shed" quite a bit when discussing their builds. Juan explains, "We would always hang out in my garage after school, and the home we moved into later actually had a shed storage room in the backyard. That's when the garage was nicknamed 'The Shed' by my good friend Adan Arredondo, and since then everyone would say, 'Let's meet at the shed,' or 'I'll meet you at the shed.' It was the hangout spot after school and on the weekend." Serving as their workshop, hangout, and ultimately a key component to keeping the brothers out of trouble and focused on their cars.
