D1GP: Don't Call It A Comeback...
Guess what drift lovers? D1GP is officially back on the scene. When we first broke word that they were thinking of getting into the swing of things (see "Spill the Beans" - September '08), the thought of taking on Formula D was only that: a thought. But from the sellout crowds that helped turn D1GP into a household name and being the first to put drifting on the map, right down to their absence from the US drift scene completely in '08, D1GP, headed by new president, Isao Saita, teamed up with seasoned pros to do the job right. With the help of Rich Goodwin and Mike Munar - part of Driven Events - along with Ed and Emil Arguelles of Imagine Media Group, you're going to see an all-new D1GP US staff who are currently planning dates for 2009 at downtown locations all across America with purpose-built courses guaranteed to take drifting to an all-new high. Says Goodwin, "The biggest issue was that D1 had an existing series in Japan and while they wanted to produce a series in the US, there wasn't enough time to schedule multiple US events in between their Japanese schedule or ship those cars back and forth, not to mention the extreme costs of such a venture. Even though they were recognized around the world as the drifting authority, they most certainly could've built a name for themselves as a US powerhouse but for Japan it wasn't that simple. They needed US-based management who understood the market and the know-how to build an event - that's where we come in and how we're going to help." We can't wait to see what happens from here...
