Top 10 Photochop Challenge Submissions of Popular Tuner Cars

The best doctored images of reader created, modded car photography

Jan 29, 2014

For almost a decade, our eurotuner Photochop Challenge contest encouraged visitors to digitally alter stock car photography and submit those creations for various prizes and bragging rights. We confess, one of the best parts about the crowd-sourcing exercise has been witnessing the lengths of peoples' creativity - which can produce some breathtaking examples of imagined modified cars. Given some artists' penchant for the ridiculous, it has also resulted in a lot of goofy pictures of completely butchered rides, robots, dragons and explosions (Doubt us? Go look for yourself).

We'd like to see what the european car following can do with a stock image - winner(s) receiving a prize, of course - but first wanted to recap favorite past submissions from earlier Photochop Challenges. We initially gravitated toward the absurd - the not-necessarily-"artistic" - but then thought better of it and just decided to showcase the more serious attempts herein. Again, if you want to see some of the funnier entries, the ticket is clicking through the links below.

Tell us in the comments section below, what new tuner platform you think should become the next Photochop Challenge platform. 2014 BMW M4 maybe? M235i? You make the call.

Audi R8

We give this one to Anthony Rodriguez's wide-body translation of the mid-engine AWD sports car. Body treatment also includes side skirts, wing, and vented hood, while other mods include LED headlights, multi-piece dished wheels and a big brake kit. Honorable mentions go to Gerardo Garay, Drew Abejon and Elise Olizarraga for their entries.

BMW 135i

Ryan Giorgio's 1-Series is tops in our book. He created his version with chopped roof and headlights, larger wheels and tires, front lip, reworked front bumper, front-mount intercooler, fog lights, shaved door handles, tinted windows and a candy red finish. Kudos go to Joel Hernandez, Doug Friedman and Anthony Rodriguez for their creations.

Mr. Rodriguez nails the E92 challenge, too, in our estimation. His wide-body racer is based on the M3 GTR competition machine and flosses a Vorsteiner hood, M3 GTS rear wing, side-exit exhaust, BBS LMs, racing seats, harnesses and a roll cage. Illustrations from Martin Kaminski, Shannen Jones and Nathan Shrum also impressed us.

Photochop challenge ford focus todor kolev Photo 14/38   |   Photochop Challenge Ford Focus Todor Kolev

Ford Focus

Todor Kolev from Bulgaria stole our hearts with his interpretation of Ford's third-generation compact hatchback. He created a JDM-style Focus with a Honda S2000 front bumper and side skirts modified to fit the Ford, supplemented by three-piece Work wheels with stepped lips. We were feeling entries from Cameron Scott, Randy Cass and John Sickling, also.

Photochop challenge mini clubman drew abejon Photo 18/38   |   Photochop Challenge Mini Clubman Drew Abejon

Mini Clubman

Drew Abejon's entry was plucked for glory thanks to his immaculate execution of the DTM touring car theme, complete with authentic Red Bull sponsorship and background. We like the way Drew channeled the body and raised the fender to create a convincing touring car profile, yet still retained the recognizable Mini face. Clubmen (? Clubmans?) by Jared Buford, Ryan Giorgio and Mark Fairstein also kicked butt.

Photochop challenge volkswagen beetle frances phillips Photo 22/38   |   Photochop Challenge Volkswagen Beetle Frances Phillips

Volkswagen Beetle

We loved Francis Phillips' cool-blue Bug with its R32 swap, BBS LMs and new front bumper. Francis also shaved the hood, bumpers and doors to give it a super-clean finish that begs to be driven. Doctored pics from Cameron Scott, Trevor Daniels and Ford Focus challenge winner Todor Kolev also earned thumbs way up.

Photochop challenge volkswagen CC drew abejon Photo 26/38   |   Photochop Challenge Volkswagen CC Drew Abejon

Volkswagen CC

Clubman challenge victor Drew Abejon wowed us with his "comfort coupe," too, creating a two-door version with shaved handles, turn indicators and front plate, raised wheel apertures, and enlarged brake ducts in the front bumper. Abejon made extensive use of carbon, and also added a tow hook, side exhaust, single wiper, antenna, ghost graphics and a front-mount intercooler. Props also go out to Matei Radu, Pedro Martins and Adam Wilson for their entries.

Photochop challenge volkswagen GTI jon sibal Photo 30/38   |   Photochop Challenge Volkswagen GTI Jon Sibal

2006 Volkswagen GTI

We dig that our silly little photo hacking exercise has even attracted noted visionary creatives, like designer and illustrator Jon Sibal. He helped us shape the challenge when we first got it rolling and even submitted an entry, this flashy GTI rocking flared fenders, vented hood, front lip spoiler, and beefier running gear, in addition to host of other mods. Illustrations from Anton Sutovsky, Hunt Dougherty and Jon Glover were also among the hottest fare.

Photochop challenge volkswagen jetta josh cloud Photo 34/38   |   Photochop Challenge Volkswagen Jetta Josh Cloud

Volkswagen Jetta

Like Sibal, Josh Cloud also qualifies as a high-profile car artist, as we've seen his Gurnade branded designs for some time now. The photography teacher out of Ohio submitted a Jetta colored a custom Vibrant Copper Metallic and donning a molded, custom lip kit and side skirts, graphics package, Forgestar F14 wheels and Recaro seats. Renderings turned in by Vlad Sokolovsky, Cameron Scott and Chris Joe also deserve honorable mention.

Photochop challenge volkswagen up todor kolev Photo 38/38   |   Photochop Challenge Volkswagen Up Todor Kolev

Volkswagen Up!

Todor Kolev, winner of the Focus challenge, also ruled the Up! entries, this time with his time attack-skewing "SupeR Up!" Kolev's city car sports carbon fiber body panels, wide fenders, WRC-style rear wing, side splitters, and a custom front bumper that allows rapid removal for intercooler access. Fitted with lightweight wheels, slick tires and Brembo brakes, there are carbon fiber cooling ducts alongside the new headlight units, while inside Todor added an FIA roll cage and Sparco seat. The Up! challenge just started a few days ago so not many entries have been submitted yet, but Kolev's racer was too good not to highlight here.
