The J-series has had an open invitation to many Honda enthusiasts for years now. And for all the right reasons as well. Overall cheap entry point, solid reliable horsepower and thanks to Hasport, a generally painless installation—that is, if you're okay with cutting a massive hole in your hood, or up for illegally cruising around with your hood completely off. Though the J-series has always been a readily available option for those looking to swap some more power into their backyard chassis, it's often been thrown out the window due to the fact that it has never been a viable option for a street car. Not to mention that riding around with a massive V6 popping through your hood has never really looked so great. Though times are changing and the game is evolving. Just as K, and even B-swaps originally started as awe-inspiring rarities that eventually moved up the ranks to a standard in Honda street builds, the J may finally prevail into the daily lineup with help from builders like Austin Smith and his Acura Integra.
Striving for uniqueness, Austin dismissed his fellow builders' recommendations of going with the usual K and set about building a J-series swap car with one goal in mind—closing that dang hood. Sourcing a J32A from an Acura TL Type S, Austin began the process with a set of Hasport adjustable motor mounts allowing him to easily place the motor exactly where he wanted. Yet as most J-series swappers usually find, the plan massively backfired while closing the hood as he realized the Acura Integra was literally immobile due to the oil pan resting on the pavement. The engine was then removed, the mounts were reexamined for possible modifications and it was back to square one. After hefty research and patience, Austin finally decided to fabricate custom notches onto the Hasport mounts allowing him to carefully bump up the engine millimeter by millimeter until the hood would finally close while remaining completely functional as far as ground clearance goes. The result? A 310hp Acura Integra you would never know stood a chance. Enticing, I know.
Though Austin is not the first to complete this process, the successors are few and far between. Yet with the road now paved and the research and innovation readily available, the enclosed J may just become the new go-to for future builders. With as quickly as our industry is progressing and as the definition of "streetcar" continues to transform I honestly feel it won't be long until we start seeing more of these bad J-swaps lined up at our local meets. Supercharged V6 EK? Let's see it!
