It was on October 11, 2013, that Scion announced its partnership with Bulletproof Automotive to produce a supercar concept build to debut at the SEMA show utilizing the FR-S platform. An FR-S supercar . . . well, we all know the Scion FR-S, but what exactly makes a car a supercar? Ben Schaffer, president of Bulletproof Automotive, has a distinct definition that was the foundation for the build. "The perfect supercar that inspires me is a driver-oriented, lightweight, massively powerful, balanced performance car that is constructed with uncompromising exotic materials both inside and out," he says. The team at Bulletproof dubbed the SEMA build the Concept One. "The Bulletproof FR-S Concept One was designed to be the most extreme, complete, and audacious project ever attempted with the FR-S platform," he says. So, how did they go about living up to such powerful words?

They began with the interior. The Scion FR-S chassis was stripped of all of the interior components and paneling. Carbon fiber was used to construct their replacements, while supercar-grade Alcantara was used to rewrap virtually everything in sight, including the Japan-market Recaro RS-G front seats. The red monochrome look is the same as what you would find in supercars such as the Lamborghini Super Trofeo or the Porsche 911 GT2, so it would only be befitting for a build of this caliber. The custom carbon work yielded over 50 pieces, which far surpasses something like a Lamborghini Aventador and even rivals a Pagani Zonda!

For the exterior, the team decided to utilize the handmade Varis Widebody Type D kit, a dramatic, curved, vented, and chiseled exterior package that complements and flows with the Scion FR-S' OE lines yet creates a look all its own. A Varis carbon hood, carbon trunk, and euro GT wing were also utilized in addition to a dry carbon complete roof replacement made by Esprit Japan. Over 26 pieces were used to create the exterior package that you see before you. Finally, Lamborghini Balloon White paint was chosen to slather the exterior of the car. "We thought it would nicely set off the carbon and red accents, and provide a good showcase for the lines of the Varis widebody," he says. The creativity of the team can be seen through the custom touches to exterior such as the carbon overlay on the front bumper that elongates the look of the hood, as well as the red striping added to draw attention to the VSDC carbon that rings the lower portion of the car. Great minds truly do think alike as the look was carried on by Varis for their own demo cars for the Tokyo Auto Salon, and even NISMO has released something similar.

With such lofty goals, power was obviously needed to propel the chassis in the manner befitting a supercar. Powerhouse Amuse was contacted, and a turbo kit utilizing a BorgWarner EFR 6758 was used for the build, complemented by their R1000 STTI titanium downpipe and front pipe, as well as their R1 Titan Extra STTI exhaust system. Given the time constraints related to SEMA, there was no time to wait for a production kit so the Bulletproof team used the prototype turbo setup taken directly from the Amuse demo car in Japan after it was tested. The Scion FR-S boxer motor was modified to handle the forced induction by the team with 86.5mm forged pistons, custom billet rods, and ACL bearings. The result is over 500 hp on E85, yielding a better power-to-weight ratio than the Lexus LFA! To handle the vital duties of slowing the car down, an Original Runduce six-piston front and four-piston rear brake kit was utilized, using 365mm and 330mm rotors, respectively. A custom set of coilovers with external tanks and 12kg spring rates were used to handle rebound and compression for the intense track competition the car has in its future.

Make no mistake about it, ladies and gentlemen; this is not a show car. This Scion FR-S is meant to run, and it is meant to race. After making its debut here in the United States at the SEMA show, the car made its way to the land of the Rising Sun for what many consider to be the top motor show in the world: the Tokyo Auto Salon. "The car was shipped to Japan at the request of and with the support of Option magazine, Hyper Rev magazine, and Varis Japan. After the car had been requested to come to Japan, RAYS Wheels also requested the car for their booth at Tokyo Auto Salon. Option and Hyper Rev will be featuring the car in their magazines (Option and Hyper Rev 86, and BRZ World) and are holding a special event at Tsukuba Circuit where Nobuteru "Nob" Taniguchi will drive the car on January 23," he says. As you can see, this bespoke supercar intends to live up to the benchmarks of its peers that carry the same title.

"The 86 chassis is an amazing drivers' car, but these days so many supercars out there are not as involved as an enthusiasts' or owners' car . . . it's more of a car that drives itself. So many cars now have special transmissions and have so many electronics . . . The goal here was really to take an affordable sports car and turn it into a supercar. This is our attempt at doing that," he says. And don't think this was just a one-time SEMA affair. All of the high-end Japanese products that you see on the car are available for purchase through Bulletproof. Additionally, all of the custom work—from the carbon to the interior—can be replicated, although the team "always encourages customers to express themselves and their own unique tastes". No matter what you want and need, they can do it. "Anything is possible. We have fun challenging ourselves and trying to do things that are a bit unique," he says . "After doing it for this long . . . it's fun to sell parts that come in boxes and ship them out, but it's a lot more fun to make something original that no one else has."

The Bulletproof FR-S Concept One is the physical manifestation of every goal and vision that the team had. They put it as simply as this: "We liked the idea of making a baby brother for the LFA but something that was maybe in some ways even a bit more pure." How's that for sibling rivalry?

Motivation.
"The spirit and concept of the Bulletproof Automotive FR-S Concept One is simple: supercar. The FR-S/BRZ/86 platform has inspired a worldwide swell of inspiring tuner cars, race cars, and show cars. The outpouring of innovation for the platform has been spectacular. That's why we knew we could do none of the above, and we set our sights higher. We wanted a car that could rival or exceed the Lexus LFA in all areas. We wanted to take an entry-level car and elevate it to the realm of a world-beating super car. Performance, looks, sound, feeling, and dynamics all had to be taken to the stratosphere. That means that every detail was important, and we didn't want to neglect even the smallest pieces—even the pieces that no one will see except us."
