2000 Acura Integra GSR - K.I.S.S.

Keep it simple ... seriously

"I found it at some shady used car lot slammed on Rotas." You could hear Alex Markovic's voice crack during his recollection about how he came across his DC2 as compared to how it sits now. His Acura Integra addiction actually started years prior during a big event. He adds, "My dad took me to a big international car show and there was this black Type R. I was done." His love of the iconic coupe compelled him to purchase an Acura Integra GSR no matter how rough it looked. And truth be told, Alex loved his car, even in its battered state as it was originally purchased as a daily driver. For nearly two years the Acura remained relatively stock, and it wasn't until he'd driven it through two harsh Canadian winters that Alex had lost some of the passion he'd had for the DC2. He adds, "I bought a new TSX and was bored with the Integra so I tried selling it." Months passed with no interested buyers so Alex did the only reasonable thing he could think of—dive headfirst into a complete build.

The DC2 project started with a basic set of coilovers and aftermarket wheels, but eventually led to installing a turbo kit, and that summer Alex was all smiles. The following winter he addressed some of the body flaws by having the car repaired and drenched in a fresh coat of vivid silver metallic as well as swapping out the interior for OEM ITR goods. By spring the Acura Integra GSR was ready for a real tune and was strapped to the dyno, boost cranked up (which the stock engine didn't like) and kaboom it went. Alex recalled, "I never even had a chance to enjoy the car that summer. I put the car away in the corner of the garage and went on trying to enjoy my summer the best way I could, deep down inside aching about this loss."

When the next winter rolled in, Alex decided to take a more focused approach with his Acura, and the OEM block was replaced with a Darton unit complete with CP pistons and Pauter rods. He used his connections at the local Acura dealer to get a brand-new OEM Type R head, which he sent to Portflow for a 3-angle valve job and to have Supertech and Ferrea valvetrain components installed. The old Peakboost setup Alex ran was upgraded and the DC2 power steering and ABS were ditched. A less cluttered bay provided the opportunity to weld up all of the now useless holes along the firewall and he re-loomed his harness to remove any unnecessary wiring. This setup lasted Alex a solid two years until the speed bug bit and the old setup was replaced with a FullRace T3 top mount manifold and a Garrett GT3576R. Unobtanium Welding fabricated Alex all of the hot and cold piping and a Garrett intercooler was incorporated into the DC2 mix.

Feeling it was time to upgrade his suspension, Alex reached for a new set of Tein Flex coilovers, and took a little extra time to install an ITR five-lug conversion. The switch to 5x114.3 opened up a whole new world of wheel options and Alex wasted no time in picking up everything from TE37's to MF10's, all of them running either Bridgestone Potenza RE11's or Toyo R1R's. With so much forward momentum, Alex never expected to hit a low point, but, in 2012, his bad luck on the dyno reared its ugly head once again. The bottom end was toast, and, not one to wave the white flag, Alex jumped right back into a rebuild.

With the Type R engine down for repair, Alex decided to attack the Acura Integra GSR exterior once again. You might be wondering why. Alex added, "You can't drive anything in Canada without it getting destroyed, and the first paintjob didn't fix it all. I had to strip the whole car." The chassis was torn down to bare metal and new quarter-panels were welded in to replace what had been eaten by rust. Alex isn't into the over-the-top look so the only exterior mods were parts offered by Acura, including optional front and rear lip and side skirts. Instead of just "plugging" the rear wiper hole, he ordered a brand-new wiper-less ITR hatch—no corners cut here. As the outside was being rounded out, the Darton block came back in high compression 2.0L form. His original custom harness was replaced by a tucked version via Rywire. With everything reinstalled, the Acura was ready for a rematch with the dyno. This time, however, he kept the boost conservative, leaving with about 370 whp.

Alex spent all of 2013 enjoying his freshly rebuilt Acura Integra GSR and showing it all over Canada, and just like you and me, he wants more from his project. In fact, by the time you're reading this he'll have it torn apart once again in an effort to hit his goal of 600 whp. With the lessons learned along the way thus far, we have a feeling he'll reach his next goal for this Acura in no time.

A Little OEM Mixed With a Little Aftermarket
The Volkswagen guys call it OEM plus, Honda guys just refer to it as "clean." Whatever you think it should be called, Alex thinks it's his car. The only exterior mods on his car are those that were offered in the Acura accessory catalog back in 2000 and his custom shaved side moldings, and even those were done to mirror that of the iconic Type R. Alex's search for all things OEM netted him an OEM optional lip, side skirts, and rear valance that all fit, well, as good as factory pieces. Outsiders who might be used to seeing gaudy Hollywood graphics and wild aero might think the car is mundane, but not the owner. He adds, "It may be boring [to some], but I love all the OEM stuff. I like the clean look." Next on the OEM upgrade list is UKDM foglights, but don't think that Alex is completely ignoring the aftermarket as a Project Mu big brake kit is also on his to-do list. It never ends ...
