Sometimes a build is best brought to life when someone gives up on it. By doing so, this allows another enthusiast to step up to the plate in order to take a swing at doing something spectacular. Naturally, this doesn't always work, but when it does, holy shit, are all the bystanders in for a show!
When Yuu Majima of M&M Honda bought this S2000 in '10, from one of his customers, he had little intention of making it the sexy beast it is today. At that time, the only mods on the roadster were a Spoon bumper, TEIN coilovers, and a set of CE28 rollers. But after driving the soft-top for a while, Majima-san realized that it might be time for some Mugen love, so he installed a far more refined way of tackling compression and rebound. It was a pretty slick setup, at least, until the car got crushed like a cold can of Asahi one day, with the rear suspension taking the brunt of the blow.
But being that his AP1 was far from a complete loss, Majima-san decided that this was his chance to take a second swing at things. So being that the Mugen setup was about as kaput as Rick Moranis' acting career, a fresh suspension combo was swapped in once more. This time in the form of M&M Honda's exclusive Ohlins Pro-type coilovers with a custom valve setting. Then, the heavy hitter was suddenly rethinking ways in which he could connect big time via an extremely well thought-out build. It was around this time that Majima-san began fabricating the flat-bottom aero kit that can still be found on the car today, all in the hopes of helping to keep the car better planted on the track.
During this point of the two-year-long build, the two-seater was still serving double duty as a test mule at the shop and as a daily driver for its owner, with a fully built EF9 standing in as a dedicated track demon. But when Majima-san suddenly became inflamed with an undying desire to see a widebody kit on the S2000, things suddenly began to kick into high gear and the EF9 was placed on the back burner.
Despite being deterred by numerous woes during the design process, pulling inspiration from OEM and aftermarket Porsche lines pushed the Honda-exclusive tuner to new levels. By '15 the kit was complete and installed on the AP1, and Majima-san had decided that marketing production-ready versions of his unique M&M Honda Hyper widebody kit needed to be in order.
At the same time of the kit's completion, a full Toda engine build with matching ITBs were powering the high compression platform, and new performance upgrades for the S2K were emerging every other day. In true tuner fashion, this only made the devout Honda fanatic all the more inspired, and Majima-san quickly went to work designing a one-off titanium exhaust system. Next, he sourced a Mugen fiberglass lid that could easily be color-matched.
With the body work almost complete, it was time to turn toward wheel arch measurements so Majima-san could saddle-up to homeplate with the perfect size and offset at the ready. Being in the aftermarket Honda business certainly has its perks, especially when you've been around for over three decades. A quick call over to Work Wheels returned some outstanding results. After giving the dimensions he was looking for, Meister M1 wheels came back as the ideal option, based purely upon the extreme offsets Majima-san was looking to run. Complete with a polished lip, the red-faced wheels looked like they were meant to be on the vehicle, and it was time for a bit of testing.
Majima-san had decided it was high time to let the S2K stretch its legs, and the infamous Autopolis Circuit was the obvious choice for the first real shakedown. After tweaking the AEM ECU a bit, and handing over the keys to pro driver and close friend Eiji "Tarzan" Yamada, the results were in. Yamada-san came back grinning like he had just caught a glimpse of Jane swinging nude beneath the jungle canopy, openly admitting that he was very impressed with the amount of grip the car provided.
Now that the heavily reshaped S2000 was dialed in properly, Majima-san went about marketing and promoting his widebody creation. While future plans will likely include things like a rollcage for better and safer time attack runs, and eliminating both AC and heater systems remains a must, shaving off weight really is the goal across the board. Although plans to cut kilos include fabricating a custom floor pan, Majima-san admits that it's the wider track and broader contact patches that make him grin every time he climbs inside.
With a front that is 80mm wider, and a rear that's 100mm wider, 295-series tires in the rear reinforce the Honda builder's belief that attaching a fully functional widebody aero kit to an S2000 will only improve its performance when executed properly. This car is just one of many Honda models that have been a huge hit for the Fukuoka-based tuning shop. Not just as a race car and R&D marketing tool, but as an example of what is possible when the right people take the plate, and subsequently hit a grand slam like no other.
