When I was in high school, if I met a kid who told me he or she would own an NSX before they hit 25, then I would probably think they were crazy. Yet that is exactly what happened to Royce Fortier of Franklin, Wisconsin.
In his young(er) years, Royce was actually more of a lifted truck fan until one fateful day he spotted a 2008 Civic Si sedan while driving past a dealership.
The Si’s unique silhouette immediately caught Royce’s attention and he promptly bought one when he graduated high school. From there Royce caught the bug and began modifying the Si, eventually converting it completely to JDM FD spec.
Though all the while Royce was slowly falling in love with another car: the NSX. A few of his friends owned the Japanese supercar and the more he time he spent with them, the more infatuated he became with the NSX. Before long it was his new dream car – though why just buy an NSX when an authentic, right-hand-drive JDM NSX could be had instead?
It just so happened that around this time, due to the famous (or infamous) “25 year rule,” the 1991 NSX had just become cleared for legal importation to the states. Royce turned to the best import dealer he could find: Top Rank Motorworks in sunny Southern California. The dealer had a mint-condition 1991 NSX on hand.
Royce flew to California to see the NSX in person, and instantly fell in love with it.
Having benefited from a successful career as a Real Estate Advisor, Royce decided that he was going to “pull the trigger” on his dream car. After signing some paperwork (and $40k later) the NSX was officially his and on a transporter back to Wisconsin. Oh, did I mention that Royce is only 22 years old? Pretty impressive right?!
You can imagine that owning a car like this at such a young age attracts a fair amount of haters; but Royce shakes them off, stating “I know I work hard and I want to have toys to play hard. That’s what I do with this car.” I can respect that.
Once the NSX made it back to Wisconsin, and after the massive headache of getting the car registered, Royce began to really make the car his with some choice modifications.
The engine mod list is short but sweet. An ARC aluminum radiator was added to keep things cool. For improved breathing, a K&N filter combined with a Taitec header and Taitec GT-009R exhaust were bolted on.
For a closer gear ratio, Royce swapped out the stock transmission with a 6-speed gearbox from an NSX-R.
A set of Endless Zeal coilovers combined with a Mugen harness bar keep the chassis nimble and rigid in the right places.
The NSX’s shoes consist of WedsSport SA-55M wheels (18x9-inch in the front and 19x10 in the back) wrapped in Nexen Tires.
Outside the “Formula Red” painted NSX is a strict JDM affair with a Shine Type I carbon fiber front lip, authentic NSX-R rear wing, Gruppe M side skirts, and I’s rear spats. Inside you’ll find a pair of Recaro Type R seats paired with Takata three-inch “drift” harnesses, a Nardi steering wheel, and a URAS Power Meter from Blitz.
While the NSX doesn’t make much power over stock, that was never really the point for Royce. He just wanted to own the object of his affection, make it unique, and drive it as much as possible. It is a familiar dream to many of us in this culture. I give major props to Royce for achieving it at such a young age!
