2006 Honda S2000 – Made in Hawaii

An unexpected surprise from a guy who never worked on cars or was planning to own an S2000

"I wasn't expecting to own an S2000." Those simple words show just how unplanned this build really was. JP Damo of Hawaii hadn't even driven one, but an unforeseen set of circumstances provided him with an unexpected opportunity that he embraced wholly.

Previously JP owned a Civic, but the project turned out rather lackluster, so he set his sights on a more potent and sporty-looking DC5. "I wanted an Acura RSX Type-S, but at that time I couldn't find a clean one, so I decided to expand my choices. I started looking at S2000s and an FA5 Civic Si," JP recalls. After just a couple of weeks of searching, he came across a very clean Grand Prix White S2K with 43K miles. Wasting no time, he immediately called the owner to set up a meeting. "Later on that night, I test drove the car—my first time driving an S2000," he reminisces. "I fell in love with it the moment I drove it." And just like that, the journey to what you see pictured had begun.

JP took it upon himself to use his new project car as an opportunity to educate himself and learn skills that the majority of enthusiasts never do. He puts it simply: "I learned how to weld, do engine work, modify my harness, fabricate body panels, and most importantly—pay attention to details."

For the exterior, JP went with a Voltex front bumper and canards combined with Circuit Garage fenders—this all flows nicely together thanks to custom bumper extensions as well. For the quarter-panels, he utilized Industry Garage rear over-fenders and Mazda RX-7 carbon-fiber side diffusers. The newly shaped body was then prepped by JP and his brother-in-law, Gee, then painted a custom pearl white. To fill the widened arches, 18x10-inch front and 18x11-inch rear SSR MS3 wheels wrapped in Toyos were called upon.

"I built the car as a show and weekend race car. I have no problem driving it to its limits," he says. With the "show" aspect of the car aside, the limits of this S2000 are impressive. His engine setup makes 466 whp and 350 lb-ft of torque, more than enough to get into a lot trouble in Hawaii. To achieve those numbers, JP added a Precision T4 6266 turbo mounted to the F20 via a Full Blown sidewinder manifold. 1,000cc injectors and a 340-lph fuel pump provide enough fuel so the motor doesn't starve, while a Mishimoto cooling setup keeps engine temps down. Getting all the parts to work together is a Hondata Flashpro.

Many would be more than happy to own and drive an S2000 such as this, but JP is just getting started. "My next goal is to get the engine bay shaved 'n' painted, and also hunt for a spare motor so I can build it to handle more power." Anyone care to guess who's going to be sanding down the bay and taking the F20 apart? Yeah, you guessed it…
