In June of this year, we announced a way for your ride to be immortalized in the pages of Super Street. In collaboration with automotive social platform Wheelwell, the Wheelwell x Super Street Build Search was born and the response was incredible!
Car enthusiast and Mitsubishi connoisseur Brett Adams was chosen by our staff to have his car featured in Super Street, and to sweeten the deal, his photoshoot was to take place with the one and only Larry Chen - a legend in the world of automotive photography. This all came about after the contest, which called for current and even new members of the popular online automotive community, to submit their builds via Instagram for a chance to be immortalized in the pages of SS. Wheelwell users get a chance to list any upgrades they've added to their vehicle and the site's motto, #forthebuild, lines up perfectly with what our network is all about.
Adams' Galant is a '91 model, one of just 2,000 (number 1,837, to be exact) ever produced. The car came into his possession back in 2013 and since that time he's gone all in, throwing over 100 mods at it and shaped it into one of the best examples of the sedan we've ever encountered. "I'm just an average guy, with an average budget who wrenches in the garage," says Adams. "If you use the resources available to you—namely whatever time and money you can spare—there's not much you can't accomplish if you stay committed to your project and your goals. If you combine that with the power of the internet and the vast amounts of information out there, and you'd be surprised at what you're capable of."
His love of Mitsubishi began back in high school when he locked eyes on a '90 Eclipse. That infatuation progressed into wanting the rarer Galant VR-4. Both the Eclipse and Galant are powered by Mitsubishi's venerable 4G63, and with the all-wheel-drive platform, Adams' progression was a no brainer. His love doesn't end there, though; along with this well-built Galant, he also owns a '92 Galant, number 820 of 1,000. At first, it's just a build; after a second one joins the stable, you're a certified hoarder—and Adams wears the "Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 Hoarder" label as a badge of honor.
"I never imagined in a million years my car would be in a magazine. I don't have sponsors, a team of designers and fabricators, or anything extraordinary behind the scenes of my build. However, I am part of some awesome forum groups, such as DSMtuners.com and Galantvr4.org," says Adams. "Through these forums, I've been able to connect with a vast network of guys just like myself, who build cool stuff in their garages. These are also the same people who are still innovating and producing parts and other items which support a platform that has been losing aftermarket support for over a decade."
Though the parts are disappearing, this VR-4 is fitted with a slew of rare OEM Mitsubishi parts. JDM front and rear bumpers replace their U.S. counterparts, while a JDM RS hood covers the coveted powerplant. Speaking of the heart, the 4G63 was upgraded with a Forced Performance FP3052 turbo and some supporting parts that, with the help of E85 fuel and 30 pounds of boost pressure, belt out 436 horsepower and over 400 lbs.-ft of torque. Power is transferred with confidence through an upgraded ShepTrans stage 2 transmission backed by a custom QuarterMaster 7.25-inch Rally Gear-Drive 6-leg twin disc clutch. That power combination spits its musical note out of a 3-inch CM Performance exhaust system.
"These days, I much prefer to enjoy the car rather than wrench on it," Adams went on to say. "I've stopped modding it to make more power, and for the most part, have satisfied my own personal goals for the build. I never really built the car to stand out, set any records or to grab attention. That being said, I love the fact that most people still really appreciate the car for what I think it is: A build that any car guy or gal can put together in their garage if they put forth the time and effort."
On the outside, 17-inch Work Meister S1 wheels wrapped in Federal RS-RR rubber provide the footprint, while the Galant is planted firmly to the road thanks to JIC Magic FLT-A2 coilovers with a set of Whiteline anti-sway bars tying the suspension together. The front and rear OEM Mitsubishi brake calipers are still in place, but give an extra bite with StopTech rotors and Hawk HP Plus pads.
Chatting with Adams, he wanted to stress the "everyman nature" of the car. He wants you to know that this Galant is not a magazine car, but rather a car guy's build that just ended up in a magazine. However you want to slice it, for the Super Street staff, Galant VR4 builds don't get any better than this outstanding example.
