Photochop Challenge 4 - BMW 1-Series Results

Here are the best entries to our fourth Photochop Challenge for the BMW 135i. Is yours among them?

Apr 1, 2008

This is our fourth Photochop Challenge, which was preceded by challenges for the Mk5 GTI, BMW E92 and Audi TT. However, we feel this fourth one has generated some of the best quality to date and judging a winner was extremely difficult - not that it's a competition, but we got together with DC Shoes to reward the entrant who we felt had created the best artwork.

As always, we challenged you to create the most innovative mods based on a photo we provide. This time it was the new 135i coupe, thanks to our friends at BMW, who kindly gave us permission to use their photo.

We understand the car's already special, thanks to its M-Technic front bumper, 18" wheels and lowered stance but understand it's just a starting point for your photochop skills. And since we like to reward effort, we persuaded DC Shoes to donate a pair of its awesome Pro Spec 1.0 competition driving shoes to the image we judged to be the most interesting.

The FIA-approved Pro Spec shoes cost around $200 in the stores and they're hugely desirable. Available in several cool colors, they were developed and are used by DC Shoes' Ken Block. He's a co-founder of the number one skate shoe company and also a successful Subaru rally driver, which is how he gets to test his latest driving shoes.

As always, the Photochop Challenge was hard fought, with some incredibly well executed illustrations to choose from. We were actually divided on the final outcome but the artist we felt most deserved the DC Pro Spec 1.0 shoes was Ryan Giorgio. He's a regular entrant to our challenges and we liked how he'd subtly chopped the roof to give the 135i a sleeker profile, then reworked the front end to give it narrower headlights and grille plus a bser hood. It also has a reworked front bumper with lip and foglights, plus a large front-mount intercooler. The larger wheels and tires really dominate the car, while the shaved handles, tinted windows and candy red paint are more easily overlooked.

So a pair of DC kicks are in the mail to Ryan with our compliments. And don't forget to enter the et Photochop Challenge 5, which appeared in last month's issue. In case you missed it, the details are on and you still have a short amount of time to enter. We've asked you to design the sponsor livery for this season's Turner Motorsport BMW racecar, with a great prize on offer to the winner.

In the meantime, please enjoy the best entries from Photochop Challenge 4 on these pages. If you missed this Challenge but would like to send us your chops anyway, email them to and we'll print the best ones on the Letters page. Or look out for Photochop Challenge 6 in a few months, once we've announced the results of the BMW racecar livery challenge.

Earlier this year, Subaru announced the WRX STI would get a 5-horsepower boost for 2019. No, it wasn’t much, but at least the STI would no longer be outgunned by the turbocharged four-cylinder Mustang. Subaru’s latest special edition STI, however, comes with a much less underwhelming boost in power. It’s called the WRX STI TC 380, and
