Seven months after Eddie Rosovich picked up this '04 Audi A4 Avant, he rolled into Englishtown Raceway at Waterfest 16 with a built show car. Despite being an auto and a wagon, the project had it all; from a reupholstered interior to air-ride suspension, big brakes and a turbo upgrade.
A couple of months later, Eddie attended H2O International and was honored as one of the ten best cars in Top Dawg - an amazing feat for a guy who wasn't even a hardcore Audi enthusiast a year earlier.
"The whole thing started when I was hanging out with a friend who had an Audi," Eddie started. "It was dropped on H&R springs and Ultrasport rims but he was kind of a car whore. Since I love wagons, I told him if he ever wanted to sell it, I'd buy it.
The next day he calls me up and a week later I owned it!"
With an existing wagon fetish, Eddie was saving for a Volvo V50R so found himself with money when he took possession of the Avant. "When you're 17, you dream about building a car but only have money for an intake or springs, never enough to complete a car. Yet I finally had a job and all the money saved, so I wanted to mod the crap out of this car," he explained.
Eddie soon began running with NERD (aka Northeast Region Dubs) and breathing the Dub culture. "I was always into BMWs and Japanese cars but the Audi/VW scene is different. Everybody is more laidback and drama-free," he told us.
His mates helped him find a direction, which was the old black & white Spy vs Spy comic strip. So the owner quickly ditched the wheels for a set of 18" VMR wheels in satin black. "I'm a big fan of open-spokes and wanted my brakes to be seen," he smiled.
Behind the wheels wasn't any puny rotor upgrade, Eddie opted to go big, switching to 13.9" front rotors and six-piston Porsche Cayenne calipers from ECS Tuning.
Continuing the b&w color combo, the chrome window surrounds and roof rails were painted black by Brighton Collision along with the roof and mirrors. A carbon splitter then added more emphasis to the front.
With lowering springs already installed, Eddie felt the urge for something more aggressive. "I was against air but after seeing a couple of friends' cars, I went with it and fell in love. You really can't tell I have air because the ride is so good," he reported.
Since there weren't many air-ride options for an A4 Avant, Squeaky Klean Auto took on the daunting task. They sourced universal parts such as Goodyear bags and an Air Ride Technologies tank, valves and hardware to outfit the quattro.
Despite the more appealing ride height, Eddie knows his wagon could go much lower with a notched subframe, which he plans to do over the winter.
The trunk was quickly thrown together for Waterfest but when we caught up with Eddie after H2Oi it featured the hardwood seen here. "I did the trunk myself from Home Depot," he laughed. "I put the floor together, traced the floor mat and used a jigsaw to cut it out. It cost me like $25."
The eight-gallon air tank was mounted in the back and decorated with two Heineken kegs. "I lucked out because they were the perfect diameter and look like they're part of the tank," he revealed. The compressor and hardware were hidden under the floor in the spare wheel well.
Eddie continued his madness up front where RNL Auto Upholstery covered the seats centers with a carbon-look white vinyl. The headliner and pillars were redone in black alcantara and white diamond-stitching to create more luxury.
With almost everything finished, Eddie decided the 1.8T could use some more power. Unfortunately, he was limited by the stock five-speed auto but opted for an APR K04 turbo upgrade. The kit included a cat-back exhaust with downpipe and software.
An AWE front-mount intercooler was also fitted, along with a Forge turbo inlet hose and aFe intake. The car came with 170hp but Eddie claims the A4 now has 300hp on 93-octane fuel.
Having built the Audi in less than a year, Eddie has further plans for the winter, including an RS4 steering wheel and pedals, S4 rear brake conversion and suede shifter. He also hopes to arrive at the '11 show season with a built motor, bigger turbo and shaved engine bay.
With his Spy vs Spy Audi A4 Avant also expected to have a new look for 2011, Eddie has definitely embraced the Euro community and recently bought a supercharged B5 A4 V6 as his daily driver. Not bad for a guy who was about to buy a Volvo!
