Taking a perfectly good ‘92 BMW 535i with a bulletproof M30 I6 engine and producing over 300hp seems unnecessary but oh so right. In the case of this 5 Series, its mission was to prove not all production 5 Series are destined to be lazy commuters.
Having interacted with many stock E34s, we can attest to the cars docile nature and brilliance as an early ’90s luxury cruiser. Its quiet, reliable and yes, while the maintenance bill can tip the scales from time to time, the car draws you in and earns your loyalty.
As with most aging luxury sedans, a turning point occurs when maintenance bills begin to challenge your devotion. However, a quick sale isn’t the only solution, sometimes the scales tip toward resurrection.
Marquette Chester falls into this category. Having driven the car off the showroom floor back in ’92, he was too attached, so decided to dig in and start a project other E34 owners fantasize about: adding a supercharger.
Yes, the internet is packed with BMW 540i and M5 sedans producing insane horsepower, but what about the regular cars? They deserve more horsepower too.
“The man is completely obsessed with speed…” said Tony Lawshee of Buckhead Imports in Atlanta, GA. Tony’s company is familiar with Mr Chester’s appetite for performance-enhanced vehicles. In fact, they built several of his previous vehicles. “As soon as he buys a car, he brings it here so we can find more power.”
Marquette’s project started with the one-off supercharger kit provided by BIP. It utilized a Procharger P1-SC supercharger with custom crank pulley, brackets, piping and even going as far as creating a one-off radiator with electric fan. They made sure nothing was left to chance when the car was strapped down to the dyno. Tony Lawshee was able to get a Miller Performance WAR chip dialed-in to the forced induction system, producing 307hp at 5700rpm and 285 lb-ft at 4400rpm.
To ensure the E34 could handle the newfound power, Marquette lowered the car on H&R springs and Bilstein shocks, adding a Brembo BBK along with a BMP Design rear camber/caster kit. Finishing it off, he fitted 19x8” BBS CH-R wheels to all four corners.
Inside, two-tone leather and a hidden stereo system was outfitted by Cartunes of Atlanta to provide the right amount bass to enjoy a leisurely drive or a romp at the track.
Marquette Chester’s supercharged E34 535i has casts aside any doubt that a regular 5 Series isn’t worth a serious addition of power.
