Let's not beat around the bush; East Coast heads want to see East Coast cars, and West Coast peeps, West Coast cars. It isn't rocket science. Rest assured, no one is neglecting the East but a plethora of quality builds just happen to be right under the noses of those of us on the left side of the country. The truth is it just might take a bit more work for the guy located smack dab in the middle of Delaware than for the guy in L.A. That is unless that guy is Pakorn "PK" Siriveeraphan, from Orlando, Fla., who just so happens to own one of the most badass Anthracite Metallic EF-style hatchbacks you've ever seen, never mind what coast it's from.

Built by PK, this Civic is the culmination of knowledge and experience gained from building three different EF-type chassis Civics. "I had been working at All Version Motoring since 2003 and at the time my boss suggested that I build a Honda to represent myself as well as the shop," PK says. "I had always been a fan of the EG chassis but so many other guys at the shop were already building them so Pop, the shop owner, proposed the idea of building an EF. I never really liked that body style but I learned about all the JDM parts available for it and the differences between the USDM and Japanese versions and it blew my mind."

The first was a B20 VTEC-swapped EE (U.S.-spec EF) hatchback while the second was another swapped hatch that met an untimely end via an accident in 2004. "A month after the accident, I made a deal to trade a set of 15-inch Advan ARS wheels I had for a '91 Honda Civic from a very good customer of mine," PK says. What sounded like a lopsided trade turned out to be more than PK had expected. "When I got the car the paint sucked," he says. "On top of that, you tap the brakes and the cluster light would come on. Turn on the headlights and the brake lights would be missing; it was an absolute mess."

PK and his father decided it would be a good idea to build the Civic from the ground up so they began by stripping the entire chassis down. Luckily for PK, his dad happened to be attending auto body classes at the time, which made the EE the perfect test mule.

Accompanying the stripped-down chassis was just about every JDM EF Civic piece imaginable: front and rear bumpers, an SiR front end and rear wing, you name it, PK probably has it. He also added a Password:JDM carbon-fiber front lip and side skirts that were paint matched. PK's father spent at least three hours a day repairing the chassis and parts and prepping it all for paint. The entire painting process took more than eight months because the hatchback was meticulously painted piece by piece and the chassis itself was sprayed twice.

As soon as PK got the newly sprayed chassis back, the hatch went straight to All Version Motoring in Orlando, Fla., to receive a new heart. P'Tong, from All Version, helped PK swap in the Dwayne Begnaud-built B18C1 engine into the freshly painted bay. The engine features Skunk2 Stage 1 cams, an Integra Type R valvetrain, Crower retainers, Integra Type R pistons and rods, and AEM cam gears. To further set this EE apart from the rest, the already potent B-series engine was given added kick in the form of TWM 50mm individual throttle bodies with carbon-fiber velocity stacks. Fuel delivery comes from a Walbro 255lph pump and reaches the ITB throttles with the help of Precision 440cc fuel injectors. A Spark Racing 4-into-2-into-1 Stage 1 header directs exhaust gases out to a Tanabe Hyper Medallion exhaust. To make sure the power transfers to the pavement a JDM Y1 transmission is fortified with an ACT six-puck clutch, heavy-duty pressure plate, and Fidanza flywheel. Engine management responsibilities are operated with the combination of a P28 ECU and Hondata S300 unit. After the engine changeover reached completion, PK once again reached out to his father and the two of them teamed up to put the entire Civic back together. All in all, he estimates that it took about a year and a half to get the engine and exterior up to his standards.

The interior was the next to receive all of PK's attention. He understood that this project would be a direct representation of All Version Motoring so he spared no expense. He would be selling himself short if he didn't go all out on the interior after doing just that on the bay and exterior so he set out to find every rare JDM piece he could. The first thing he did was swap out the stock dash for a CRX unit. Once the dash sat in place, PK installed an SiR instrument cluster, coin pocket, miscellaneous JDM switches, and JDM front and rear seats. Along the way he even managed to get a hold of an incredibly rare piece: a JDM LED road flare. PK finished off the interior by accenting it with Mugen pieces, including a Mugen/MOMO steering wheel, pedals, shift knob, and shift boot.

Handling upgrades come by way of the tried-and-true Koni/Ground Control combination. The hatchback originally sat on Mugen M7 wheels because PK believed them to offset the Anthracite Metallic paint perfectly, so the story behind how the 15x7 Work Equip 01s ended up on the EE is quite interesting. "The Equip 01s never even crossed my mind," PK says. "They had sat in the shop for four months and I walked by them everyday and never once thought about putting them on the car until one day when my boss, Pop, asked me to. I ended up winning the JDM OEM class at Hot Import Nights that same weekend and I haven't taken them off since. I even sold my Mugen wheels to keep them."

We're inclined to believe that PK won that award due to the collection of rare JDM pieces he's accumulated for his EE both inside and out, although we won't argue as to the new rims' effectiveness. So what's next? "I just want to drive the car," he says. "It took me three years and I'm nowhere near completion. I just want to be able to show all my customers how to build a Honda the right way."

Did You Know?
While many refer to their U.S.-spec '88-'91 Civics as EF chassis, they aren't. Check your VIN plate because the EF chassis code is exclusive to Japan. Unless you've had a true righthand drive sled shipped over in a container, chances are you've either got an EC, ED, or EE chassis. The coding becomes complicated when you account for the number scheme preceded by the chassis code lettering but here's an oversimplified USDM cheat sheet:

EC: most hatchbacks, some wagons and sedans

ED: Most crxs and sedans, some hatchbacks

EE: Most wagons
