Husband And Wife Wheel 'N Deal To Expand Their Honda Family

Jason Powers' 1998 Honda Civic CX
There are typically three types of women that males encounter when they introduce their car to the relationship; you have the girl who absolutely hates cars, the girl who secretly hates them, yet lies about it, and the girl who loves cars, aka "the perfect girl". For Jason Powers, finding that special someone was not a difficult task at all. His better half, Lisa, not only fully supports his hobby but also likes to join in. How perfect can it be for a car guy to have his wife alongside him while wrenching on a project car?

"We've been working on cars together for over ten years now," Jason says. For most, the car is usually the stable figure in the guy's life while he seeks his future wife. Jason however, has done things differently. You can almost call him a "serial dater" when it comes to cars. He's had his share of failed relationships with Hondas throughout the years while his wife has been a steady presence. I guess you can say he's a "player" when it comes to Hondas-a 'build it and quit it' kind of guy. It wasn't until this 1998 Civic CX came along that Jason finally accepted a little Honda monogamy.

$18,940 Base Model (MSRP) 28/40 MPG Fuel Economy

Much like love, this Civic came out of nowhere and was totally unexpected. To get with this car, he had to first end his relationship with his previous flame. "I had a '00 Civic EX at the time with a '98 ITR engine, Mugen Twin-Loop, and a nice paintjob," Jason reminisces. "I had it for about 8 months and was actually happy with it, but I was browsing online one night and found a '98 Champ White Civic hatchback. The owner had recently done a K20-swap and was looking to sell or trade it. I emailed him immediately and offered him my Civic to see if he was interested."

If you think a straight-up trade is unfair, well, you're not the only one. We're not at liberty to say how Jason does it because frankly, we don't know how, but let's just say that Jason is very persuasive when it comes to this sort of thing. This is the same guy who once traded a $600 set of wheels for a mint, completely stock '94 Civic CX. He then traded that for an EF with a B16 swap that he preceded to trade five months later for a '91 Integra that also had a B swap. But it doesn't end there. Powers then traded that for a '95 Civic with a BAR verified GSR swap that he traded just three weeks later for the hatchback that he ultimately used to acquire this K20 hatchback. Confusing right? To put it simply, Jason goes through cars like he does underwear and always manages to end up with a cleaner version.

"It took some convincing and many emails back and forth, but I was eventually able to get him to do the trade straight-up!" Jason says proudly. "Friends of mine were amazed at how I was able to pull it off!"

Now it may seem like the deal of the century, but there were some cons to the trade that made the pill a bit easier to swallow for the original owner. The Civic had a fresh paintjob, a five-lug, and K20 swap, but it was also missing a lot of things; the majority of the interior pieces were missing and the suspension was bone stock.

"I started off by going to Honda and ordering all new seals, plugs, gaskets, and clips that were missing throughout the car. There were also some little hiccups here and there that had to be corrected. I had to re-wire and re-route wires that were just lying around and had to tighten up some bolts that were on the verge of falling off the chassis."

"My original goal was pretty simple; I wanted to replicate the look of a '98-spec Spoon CTR. I picked up some JDM CTR pieces from N1 Concepts and before long I had it exactly the way I wanted it," Powers recalls. "I went to a couple of events and started to get the feeling that my hatchback wasn't as nice as the other ones, so I decided to tear it down and start over. I knew I wanted to keep this Civic for a long time so I had no intentions of trading it."

Jason proceeded to part out the majority of the hatchback and left it on jack stands so that he could fund the parts to build his ideal Civic. "For the next eight months I went on a shopping spree! Luckily I had my wife by my side helping and she was very supportive. I'm sure most women would have gone ballistic if their husbands had shopped like that for car parts."

Wek'sos Industries helped supply Jason with D2 coilovers and front brake upgrades while N1 Concepts located every JDM CTR interior piece Jason could get his hands on. N1 was also able to source him an authentic and incredibly rare Air Walker front bumper. The only thing left to complete the hatchback aesthetically were the wheels. Jason found a set of 16-inch Work Meister S1s that he quickly sent off to SIK Industries for a full polish.

The eight-month layoff created some issues for the K20A that Jason just couldn't figure out. "I made several attempts to fix it on my own but nothing seemed to work. I had given up and decided to drop it off at RedZone Performance. Sure enough, they fixed it!" Jason exclaims. While there, he also had the RedZone crew fabricate a three-inch air intake and custom exhaust system.

Jason may have had quite the promiscuous past when it came to Hondas, but he and his wife may have finally found one they could settle down with. When you get into a long term relationship with a build, you have to change things up to keep it exciting. Future plans include some headwork on the K20A as well as building a K24 bottom end.

Lisa Powers' 1994 Acura Integra GSR
The Wife's Beater
So Much More Than A Daily Driver
Like her husband, Lisa is also a huge Honda fan. She's spent the last 11 years building them with Jason but she didn't always have a nice daily driver like this teal Integra.

Htup_1005_14_o+1994_acura_integra_gsr+rear_fender Photo 11/16   |   1998 Honda Civic CX, 1994 Integra GSR - Trading Spouses

"I used to drive this broke down Pontiac Grand AM." Lisa says. "It was such a pile that my co-worker noticed and asked if I was interested in buying another car. He had a CR-X that was just sitting in his driveway because he no longer needed it. It was flawless and for $1,900 I just couldn't pass it up. I ended up driving it to work for the next six years and never even thought to modify it. The only reason we started to fix it up was because it wasn't getting any attention."

Jason had a heap of extra parts lying around and they managed to put her car together rather quickly. As we all know by now though, the CR-X didn't stay long after it was completed. Jason used his wheelin' n' dealin' expertise and quickly found someone who was willing to trade cars. It was seven hours away but the '94 Integra was definitely worth the trip.

The couple immediately went to work on their newly acquired DC2. Lisa's husband had an extra set of Blox Stage 2 cams that were originally from his CR-X and donated them to his wife's B18C1. They called RedZone Performance once again and had them install the cams with upgraded valvetrain components. Once that was completed, they decided to clean up the engine bay and did a minor wire tuck. "We wanted to remove a lot of the clutter from the engine bay. We eliminated the ABS, relocated the battery, and hid the fuse box. It looked so much cleaner under the hood afterwards," Lisa said.

Upgrades to the interior soon followed. Assorted JDM ITR interior pieces from N1 Concepts compliment the Recaro seats that were once in one of Jason's many previous Hondas. Unlike her husband's build, she worked her way from the inside out. She did the engine work first, then interior, and left the exterior for the end.

"I wanted to get the entire car repainted because it had dings in the body and some deep scratches. I daily drive this thing and it had some wear and tear even before we traded for it. I went to Ken Overfelt at Autoline Collision Autobody Repair for the complete repaint. We have history with him because he did a couple of Jason's cars and I was really pleased with his work quality," Lisa says. While the Integra was there, she also had Ken shave the moldings and antenna for a much sleeker overall look

Once the OEM repaint was completed and the entire DC2 was detailed, there was only one thing left to do; the suspension and wheels. She didn't plan on having an overly aggressive drop so she opted for a spring and shock replacement. Daily driving requires a smoother ride so she swapped the stock units with a KYB shock/Skunk2 spring combination. Rollers consist of a staggered set of 16-inch Enkei Racing S wheels that were refinished by SIK Industries. Since the photo shoot, the couple have decided to let go of the Integra once and for all. What's next? You'll have to wait and see, but with Jason's bargaining skills in full effect, you know it's going to be good.
