2006 Honda Ruckus - Forever Hustlin'

A first timer knocks one out of the park

Hai Truong's 2006 Honda Ruckus
In late 2002, when Honda introduced an all new, rugged, utilitarian urban cruiser to the U.S. market, the compact, nimble, gas-sipping Ruckus appealed greatly to the scooter crowd. No big surprises there. However, no one ever expected the import performance enthusiast crowd to latch onto the rugged little guy. A fast rising movement focused on modifying and increasing power and performance from the two-wheeled wonder began to surface, revealing an entirely new sub-culture with the insatiable appetite for "more."

While the Ruckus whirlwind was storming the nation, Hai Truong of Rosemead was busy....very busy. The eager businessman had a full plate that involved teaching his students how to play the guitar, performing with his band, and helping his family run their business. "My family and I owned an internet company and we sold everything from toys and RC car parts, to appliances and tools," He recalls. While most Ruckus fanatics come from an import performance background, Hai is a bit different. There are no project cars in his past, no car clubs, and no track days. His introduction came, simply enough, from a family member. His brother Tony had pieced together one of the most well-known Ruckus builds on the web. Dubbed "gAME oVER," Tony's project featured an old school Americana Hot Rod style, fused with custom bits and pieces that gained him quite a bit of notoriety. Once he was finished, Tony handed the keys over to Hai. "I didn't know much about them back then, but the first time I took gAME oVER for a cruise around the block, (he pauses to reflect) whew, I was instantly hooked! I knew immediately that I just had to build my own" he states.

Though he doesn't leave a trail of Honda builds behind him, Hai definitely has the "project car" mentality. Stripping his Ruckus down to the bare frame, no bolt was left unturned, no surface untouched. He chose a matte grey paint scheme to provide stout contrast to the black and aluminum accents that pepper the scooter. For motivation, the popular GY6 150cc took the place of the tiny factory 49cc Ruckus heart. A heat wrap equipped BTX header pipe to Yoshimura cyclone exhaust helps evacuate gasses, while a Mikuni TM28 allows for deeper breaths.

Taking cues from the custom chopper world, Hai ran a custom harness through the frame in order to hide any factory wires. As with any bike build, a custom seat is an absolute must. A one-off, handcrafted, leather and ostrich upholstered seat fortified with soft-gel and high quality foam sits atop a BTX custom seat pan with integrated brackets. Complete with French stitching and laser stitched two-tone pin stripe artwork, this seat could be framed and hung in a museum.

Keeping this Ruckus grounded are Fox Van R8 inch shocks out back to cushion the 12x7 ROKSTAR rear wheel and ATR custom hub. A rear disc brake caliper and Rays lug nuts round out the rear end. Up front, a 10x2.75 Daytona wheel sits beneath Kikaku low-down forks.

In the midst of becoming possessed by the Ruckus spirit, Hai and family decided that making custom parts could actually be quite profitable. With a high demand for quality parts already in full swing, the Truong's began selling existing parts, as well as their own rSPEC and rPRO products through their website, Rucksters.com. Looking at Hai's project Ruckus, which he named "Barely Legal," you'd be hard pressed to find an area that he didn't disassemble and customize. For a busy guy with no automotive history and just one year of building under his belt, there's no question that Hai and the Rucksters.com family have a bright future in the exploding custom scooter enthusiast industry.
