1993 Honda civic CX - Built On Luck

If It Wasn't For Good Luck....

Tuan Chau's '93 Civic CX
I don't know why the guy wanted to trade me, I guess I got lucky." That could be the only reason as to how Tuan Chau from Columbia, South Carolina, found this '93 Civic hatch. Tuan had already built a semi-respectable '95 Integra sporting a drag turbo kit on the stock GS-R and for a change of pace, put out a few feelers for a possible trade. "My Integra was alright, but when the guy wanted to trade me the Hatch for it I jumped on it." Tuan's new CX Hatch was already sporting a fresh coat of Desert Sage metallic, a built B-series, D2 coilovers, a slew of JDM and Spoon exterior goodies, and some other fun stuff; so Tuan had to make some major moves to make the car his own. Before the ink was even dry on the title, Tuan and his friends set off to Winter Haven, Florida, to retrieve a donor Hatch rocking a K swap. "I could have had everything and done the swap, but getting the full donor car made it a lot easier, plus I could flip what was left for extra cash." With literally everything at his disposal, swapping from one chassis to another took no time at all, and within a week of returning to SC, Tuan's new K-swapped Hatch was cruising the streets of Columbia.

Tuan's winning streak kept on rolling when less than a month after getting the Hatch moving, a local popped up looking for a K swap. Tuan was more than happy to oblige him as it would provide the funds necessary to upgrade to the coveted K20A found in the JDM ITR. "I always wanted to go to a K-series Type R, I always thought it pulled harder, and who doesn't want an 'R' motor?" The Hatch's new heart was coming all the way from Canada, so it gave Tuan plenty of time to gather some much needed parts courtesy of Hybrid Racing, Karcepts, and Weaksauce. The downtime also gave Tuan and his friends a chance to clean up the bay and bring it up to his standards. "We spent a long time chiseling out glue, welding up all the unused holes, and smoothing out every seam while prepping the bay for paint." Along with smoothing out the metal, Tuan rerouted all of his brake lines and engine wiring, so when the K20 was finally installed, all eyes would be on his build. With the bay as pretty as the body, the new heart was prepped for install. The intake side was treated to an RBC intake manifold mated to a Karcepts throttle body adapter. The stock exhaust manifold was ditched in lieu of an R Crew counterpart bolted to a custom exhaust system. Tuan then topped the new heart with a Spoon autographed Kevlar coil pack cover. The standard 4x100 suspension setup was ditched for brand-new 5x114.3 knuckles and trailing arms sporting Spoon calipers and Powers Slot rotors. Tuan upgraded the suspension further with an ASR subframe brace and anti-swaybar kit, then topped the strut towers with Spoon support bars. To complete the Hatch's transformation, Tuan scooped a neglected set of Recaro SRDs from a defunct JDM importer, and after installing his new (to him) Spoon 16x7 SW388s and bucket seats, his dream machine was ready for the streets.

No one is lucky all of the time, and Tuan, unfortunately, is no different. One week prior to Import Alliance, while returning from a local road course, the Hatch had an unfortunate meeting with a pothole. Tuan recalls, "I was with a group of friends when I hit a dip in the road and the upper arm hit the chassis and knocked a hole in it." Tuan is no slouch, so after welding in a replacement piece sourced from a wrecked Integra, the car went back to the body man. With a tight schedule, he was apprehensive at best. "I dropped off the car on a Monday with the guarantee to have it by Friday. Thursday night I hadn't heard anything and thought IA wasn't happening for me, but first thing the next morning, I got a call and it was good to go. We cleaned the car up and set off for IA." With Tuan's lucky streak ready to continue, he tentatively entered the Cleanest Engine Bay competition at Import Alliance, a daunting task if for nothing else, the sheer number of competitors. Final judging took place on Sunday, IA's final day, and Tuan was told to pull his Hatch into the winner's circle where the final judging would take place. He recalls; "The judges examined all three of the final cars, and after deliberation, announced me as the winner. It was a huge accomplishment considering the body shop fiasco and winning amongst all those great looking cars." As with most enthusiasts, this builder isn't satisfied with the Hatch as it stands, and is hoping to switch to a built K20/K24, a seat swap, and perhaps a cage. Tuan doesn't chalk up his success with this car to luck. As he put it, "no corners were cut, I took my time, so it was done right."

Spoon Certified
This is something I hadn't heard of until Tuan schooled me on it. Apparently, if you're a bit of a Spoon-o-phile like Tuan, and you're willing to jump through some hoops and answer a few riddles, you can have a representative give your car an inspection. If they like what they see, you can actually be "Spoon certified." Don't believe me? Fine, Tuan can explain. "It was pretty cool, I contacted some people and they came to check out my car. They saw all the authentic Spoon stuff I had and they gave me a certificate for being a Spoon supporter. I'm number 00718." So if you've a Spoon addiction like Tuan, dig around the internet and you might find yourself some official recognition for your love of all things Spoon.
