2000 Integra Type R and 2000 Civic Type R - Multiple (Type R) Personality

Josh Dhadwal's '00 Integra Type R & '00 Civic Type R
When you're a kid, you can pretty much get away with doing the same thing day in and day out. Watching the same movie over and over again. No problem. Don't want to change your clothes. It's cool. As time goes on however, it's not so OK to do the same thing over and over. You can't wear the same pants for weeks on end (even if they're jeans. And no, putting them in the dryer for 10 minutes with a dryer sheet doesn't count), no way you'll sit suffering through that animated movie again. And you sure as hell aren't going to buy the same car over and over again ... unless you're Josh Dhadwal of Federal Way, Washington. Don't worry ladies, he wears clean clothes and hates cartoons-but when it comes to cars, there's really only one platform that Josh will drive. And he'll do it again and again. And again.

Josh wasn't really much of a car guy growing up. Sure, he thought his older brother's Accord was cool, but he probably would have felt the same way had it been any other car. Josh's first car was a '93 Integra, but the day he got his hands on what was essentially a Type R shell was when he was hooked. He'd went on to own several more Type Rs over the years, each one a little different than the last. "I always want the best of the best when it comes to anything, and the Type R is definitely the best Honda has to offer," he states.

The story really starts when Josh was out and about one day in early 2004. He stopped by Kansai Motorsports in Seattle to check out the latest selection of JDM parts. Pulling up, Josh noticed a right-hand-drive Integra Type R with a tiny "For Sale" sign on it. Having considered a RHD for a long time, Josh couldn't believe what he saw. "Back then, I wanted ANY RHD Honda, let alone a Type R," Josh said. "When I saw that I had a chance to get in one, I was on it!"

Wasting no time, Josh bolted into the shop to chat up the owner about a buy or trade on the car. Josh struck a deal and handed over his keys plus a little cash, and got to take his turbo motor with him. He got right to work swapping in the engine and was soon driving on the right, shifting with his left, and having a blast in his new car. "I guess you could say it was love at first drive," he said.

Aside from a new engine, Josh didn't have much else planned at the time. He tooled around with the engine and checked out cool parts around town, but was relatively satisfied with the way things were. He considered swapping the engine again, but his old turbo was quick enough and the RHD set him apart from others on the road.

In late 2006, a friend of Josh's dropped the news that he'd purchased a right-hand-drive Civic Type R. Even though it didn't run, Josh was jealous of his friend's new purchase. "When he pulled up with the car I couldn't even tell you how bad I wanted it," Josh said. "After that, he was always teasing me because he knows I'm a die-hard Type R guy."

Josh watched as his friend picked up random parts in an attempt to restore it to its original standards. "I knew in my head he was never going to finish it," he said. And sure enough, Josh was right. His friend never got the chance to finish up the car-as the long arm of the law reeled him in and hauled him off to jail. "When he left, I had my chance to buy the car from him," Josh said. "The funny thing is he bought the car originally to compete with me, and now it's mine."

Literally from the moment he had the keys in his hand, Josh got started with modifications. He wanted to restore the CTR to its original form and complete what his friend couldn't, but that meant sourcing some hard-to-find goods from all over the world. "I seriously had the mailman coming every single day with something new for the car," Josh said. "The hardest part was tracking down little OEM pieces like the door harnesses." Friends were pushing him to get on board with a K20 swap, but Josh had plans of his own. "I wanted the car to be all original because it's a real CTR-and a real CTR would be nothing without the factory B16B."

With all the original parts installed, Josh returned to Kansai Motorsports for a new coat of paint on the CTR. He'd decided to hold off on aftermarket parts until he could track down everything OEM, but while waiting on paint, he got busy snatching up every Spoon part he could get his hands on, while simultaneously sourcing Mugen parts for his ITR.

With the CTR back from the shop and the ITR safe and sound in the garage, Josh was the proud owner of two RHDs. He found himself hitting the streets much more often in the ITR mainly due to the quickness of the turbo motor, but soon daily driving either one was frightening for Josh.

He picked up a daily driver, and to the surprise of no one, it was another Type R-and for the record, his sixth one thus far, and the third in his current collection. Though it arrived with a blown motor, Josh had it back up and running in no time. Soon he could rest easy knowing that his two babies were safe and sound in the garage, only to come out on special occasions like Hot Import Nights and Battle of the Imports, which earned Josh two first place ribbons: one with the CTR and one with the ITR.

For the future, Josh has a few plans. "I'm thinking about doing a fully built K24 turbo with a full race turbo kit in the Integra because it already has major mods done to it like the RHD conversion, but I want to keep the CTR stock to hold the value," Josh said. And as far as giving up the Type R platform for something else, Josh is confident that one day he'll pony up the cash for something exclusive. Until that day though, we're pretty sure he's satisfied with what he's got-after all, it only took him six tries to find automotive satisfaction.
