2000 Honda Civic - Group Effort

Friends (and family), how many of us have them?

The Honda community has taken new and interesting turns over the years, and the styles and fads that are a part of these twists and turns have led to the creation of what are arguably some of the cleanest builds in our community’s history. Incorporating styles we’ve previously witnessed primarily outside of the Honda world, such as aggressive wheel sizing and tire stretching, welding and shaving engine bays, hiding wiring, and creating one-off proprietary parts, are just a few examples of what comprises the current so-called “bar.” We are well aware that it takes creativity, time, and often, a steady supply of money to create a memorable build, but when someone possesses all of those things in conjunction with a network of good friends and family that are willing and able to contribute their time and energy, the end result can be absolutely amazing.

Jay Pinto of Fall River, Massachusetts, decided that a white hatchback would be the platform he would use to build his ideal Honda. After a bit of searching, he saw a car on eBay that caught his eye and he set out with a few of his friends, intent on bringing the vehicle home. After some time behind the wheel, Jay was happy with the way the car ran. However, upon a visual inspection, the car wasn’t exactly the most appealing. “It wasn’t in the best condition, the paint was dull and not shiny at all,” Jay reminisces. Fortunately, he had one of the most valuable assets that any man could ask for: a network of talented friends. He knew he could call on a couple of his VW buddies, Louie Corriea and Timmy Rocha, to help breathe life back into the car. With the concern of paint and body neutralized, Jay worked his negotiating skills, bargained $2,000 off the asking price, and took the Civic home.

After about a year of driving the car, Jay got a job working with yet another invaluable friend at a body shop, and he said that’s when it all started. They took the car completely apart and started repairing every imperfection. Additionally, they shaved various tidbits, such as the front license plate holes and the rear wiper, and installed a UKDM rear foglight, sedan door handles, and new sideview mirrors. They worked day and night for three weeks, and all their hard work yielded a rejuvenated, freshly painted Championship White hatch.

Jay settled into the car and enjoyed it like that for a few years. With the exterior aesthetics taken care of, the urge for more power began to grow, and Jay decided the time had come to make some changes to the powerplant. Not having extravagant power goals in mind, as well as wanting to separate his setup from the norm, he chose to go a relatively unorthodox route with a Vortech V-5, G-Trim supercharger. To assist in the power-producing process, as well as to increase the longevity of his motor, Jay refreshed and upgraded the majority of his powerplant—from valvetrain to pistons—with parts from reputable industry leaders like Portflow and Wiseco, respectively. Necessary fuel and cooling system upgrades were also addressed while the engine was out. When all the necessary parts were gathered and/or installed for the setup Jay had envisioned, the time came to put the motor back in. But there was one more aspect to the build that Jay wanted to take care of that would put the motor install on hold, and put it on hold for quite some time.

The customization and visual appeal of the engine bay has become a critical focal point for the Honda community, and Jay wanted to make sure his build was going to stand out amongst the masses. Calling on friends and family, they set out to do just that. Louie and Timmy came through yet again to help, and they “started grinding and welding all the holes and seams and made custom patches to cover some holes in the bay.” Additionally, Jay’s brother Derek helped with tough chores like sanding and polishing various items. It took the group seven months of hard work and many long nights to finally complete the bay and get the motor back in. The finishing touch to the aesthetically appealing engine bay is a custom wiring harness that Jay produced himself.

It didn’t take long to realize there were a few more facets of the build that needed to be addressed. Firstly, he realized the fake, cheap set of wheels he was rolling on had to go. “Every car show, or anyplace I went, somebody had the same wheels as me. I guess that’s what you get for paying $500 for a set of wheels.” Wanting a set of rollers on the higher end of things, Jay did some research then a set of ever-so-sought-after CCW Classics were enlisted. Lastly, the interior was redone to complement the rest of the build. He started with a pair of Bride seats and custom seat brackets made by his friend Keith. He also color-matched the seatbacks, rewrapped select portions of the interior in authentic Bride material, and installed a Nardi steering wheel along with a few other accents and accessories.

Jay openly states, “There aren’t any Hondas like this in my area or any Honda support.” We’d have to disagree. It seems as though Jay’s created a Honda to stand out and put his region on the map, and his friends and family have unexpectedly teamed up to create their own Honda support.

Vortech Superchargers
More air + more fuel = bigger boom. While it isn’t the most scientific of explanations, the result remains the same nonetheless, and is directly applicable to internal combustion engines. So how do you achieve the first part of the equation and get more air into the cylinders? One way is through the art of supercharging. Vortech Engineering is a company completely focused on centrifugal supercharging. They provide not just the supercharger units themselves, but an array of automotive performance products ranging from air-to-water aftercoolers to fuel system components. They offer individual parts and complete kits for a variety of import and domestic applications, including systems for the Honda S2000. They have authorized dealers across the globe from Canada and the United Arab Emirates to Australia, with over 250 in the United States alone.
