It’s the weekend setting that’s all too familiar to a large group of Honda enthusiasts worldwide. Late nights flow seamlessly into early morning stints of limited action and countless “close call” moments that stir up as much internal stress as they do excitement.

Regardless of what corner of the globe you reside, there’s a good chance that street racing once was or continues to be a staple with local speed freaks.

For Roberto Gonzalez Lopez, a resident of the booming import community of Puerto Rico, extracurricular street activities were a way of life. Firmly planted in his local street scene, he’d sold both his Prelude and Integra and later purchased the 2001 GS-R you see pictured. Powered by a well-built all-motor B series that pounded out well over 200 whp, the Integra served as his weapon of choice at the street races and as his daily driver. Like so many before him, Lopez eventually grew out of the illegal lifestyle and looked toward a legitimate outlet. He adds, “I was deeply involved in street racing and drag racing in my early years, but I was tired of street racing because of the dangers, the cops, etc. I remember I went to a local roadrace track with some friends to see some racing and I just liked everything about time attack and auto-x.”

At that time, there were in fact a few K-swapped Hondas roaming the island, but they were by no means common. Lopez wanted to stand out and began collecting parts to complete the transplant. Hybrid Racing mounts and ancillary parts would ensure a straightforward swap, and with the help of his friend Damaso, the engine was bolted in, then fired up and ready to roll in no time. To add a little more punch to the K, power was bumped with the addition of a few bolt-ons, including Circuit Hero’s cold-air intake that connects to a 74mm Hybrid Racing throttle body and RBC intake manifold. A custom header and 3-inch exhaust piping direct gases through an A’PEXi N1 muffler while Hondata’s K-Pro oversees all activities. A trip to Neoh2ning for some fine-tuning sent Lopez home with a healthy 235 whp and a huge smile on his face.

Solid power is only one piece of the puzzle, and knowing this, Lopez enlisted the help of Speedtechnology PR, who he refers to as “the best in the business,” to lend a hand with the fundamentals to prep him for track day. Wilwood brakes and 16-inch Volk TE37s wrapped in classic Falken Azenis rubber oversee the stop and go, while a 24mm ASR rear sway bar and a pair of Circuit Hero shock tower braces add control and rigidity to the 12-year-old chassis.

Factory rear seats and cargo accessories were scrapped, and a set of Status bucket seats were employed for spirited driving sessions. Lopez grips a suede Personal steering wheel while keeping an eye on vitals via the MXL Strada dash display surrounded by a carbon-fiber bezel.

Some might be asking why, with all of the time and money put into this GS-R, it doesn’t sport the popular JDM front-end conversion. Lopez states, “A few people told me to do the front end conversion, but I always loved the look of the USDM front end. Also, on this island there are a lot of JDM DC2 conversions, and that fact just motivated me to stand out in the crowd.” UKDM taillights, an ITR front lip, and Honda Access side skirts and rear spats are subtle, but that doesn’t mean that more aggressive aero was left off of the to-do list. Jo Alignment’s signature front splitter sits under the ITR lip and lends itself to a proper balance with a J’s Racing 3D rear wing perched atop the rear hatch. While the car was at Jo Alignment, Lopez requested a corner balancing session to maximize the distribution of vehicle weight.

Roberto Lopez experienced a sort of automotive growth spurt over the past few years. Having taken part in street racing and all of the risks associated with it, he’s matured and is taking it to the track…where it belongs. His GS-R is indicative of the quality of builds being bred in Puerto Rico, and he notes that he isn’t quite finished yet. “With the help of some great people, I think I’ve made an awesome track car. This is only the beginning, though, I have some serious plans in the future for this car.” If you were somehow unaware of Puerto Rico’s undying loyalty and enthusiasm for high-level Honda building, let this GS-R serve as notice; there’s much more to come from this island.

Growing Up

Weekend street racing during the late ’80s and early ’90s helped establish a Honda movement that continued to grow over the next 20 years. And while there’s no denying that street racing was the catalyst that brought about an entire industry, it was the ability to transition to legitimate track racing that ultimately cemented imports within the motorsport community. Long before mega events like Honda Day, Frank Choi’s Battle of the Imports set a new precedent by offering an organized event directed toward import racers, and offered them a place to call home when most domestic events wouldn’t even allow a Honda on track. Here’s to 20-plus years of progress and maturity.

Inspiration in car building can come from just about any direction and, more often than not, thrives when influence from outside the norm works its way into a builder’s final product, and this 1991 Honda Civic is a prime example of that notion. Borrowing from multiple styles helped create a one-of-a-kind ED chassis Civic that

Fourteen years is an eternity for a chassis to remain in production without a complete redesign. We rarely see cars, even special interest or sportscars eclipsing the 10-year mark in the Japanese vehicle realm with a single chassis. Sure, it happens, but it’s not a common occurrence though Nissan seems to push those limits as

Alright, you know the drill: new car is introduced and immediately it’s regarded as the worst design of all time, a product of car X and car Y creating an unwanted baby, and, of course, the always popular, “they should have asked me to design it.” It’s expected in modern times, especially with social media’s

If there’s a Bentley Continental hovering around your neighborhood, chances are it accelerates only rapidly enough to jump in front of the next guy on its way to Starbucks for that $8 latte. It probably doesn’t have any intention of attacking the clock at a weekend track day, and certainly doesn’t aspire to climb a

Nothing makes Super Street fans angrier than a prototype or rendering and up until now, that’s all we could offer regarding the 11th gen. Honda Civic. The burnt orange Civic sedan prototype that we talked about in November of last year signified a new direction for Honda who, at least in the enthusiast market, spent
