We met up with the Ryo Kaneko, owner of this Yellow Factory EG6, when visiting Nikko racetrack. We spent some time talking to him about his Lamborghini Yellow Civic and the transformation that has taken place since he bought it.

Ryo’s interest in cars and racing began when he was in high school; his friends took him out to the touge (mountain pass roads) where they raced around the winding roads. From there, he owned numerous cars before scoring this EG6 from another club member in 2003. He set his goal to “make it fast” and win races at the Nikko circuit. Ryo initially had some trouble since he was a newbie to racing, but did some time at the track and became a comfortable, skilled racer.

“floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee.”

At first glance, the car looked like an oversized bumblebee with the black door, black hood, and black spoiler, but when Ryo fired up the car, we knew this was serious. Watching this car whiz around at 100 mph on the track outside of this historic city was intense. The speed—and handling ability—of this car is stunning. To quote Muhammad Ali, “floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee”. The best part is that it is still street legal at 250 hp and meets Japan’s stringent emissions requirements.

This EG6 has won numerous awards, including the 2006 Nikko Division 3 Grand Championship, 2008 GTCC Tsukuba Series Championship, and 2008 Class 1 DIREZZA Challenge champion, as well as a Second Place finish in 2009 and Champion in 2010. As you can see, Ryo has a very impressive score sheet.

One of the key features of this car is that it’s naturally aspirated and there’s no forced power. That said the motor was built by a key sponsor of the car, F-Drider Planning at their shop in Noda City, Chiba. It’s running a compression ratio of 12.5:1 and bored from 81 to 82mm by the guys in Chiba. The camshafts are TODA Type C with Jun connecting rods holding TODA pistons and rings. The Civic can run up to 9,000 rpm. The cam gears and valve cover are custom from F-Drider’s shop to make this engine hum. The headers are from Maxim-Works and the muffler is from Kentworks.

To allow for a perfect fuel burn and optimization, there’s an ECU controller by Trust e-management and a custom tune from F-Drider Planning. Racing-spec NGK plugs are juiced by Ultra spark plug wires. Keeping the air/fuel ratio optimal and allowing for an efficient but effective power management is key on this street car by weekday and race car by weekend.

Swift springs and F-Drider four-way struts keep this car planted on the track and the streets. The bulk of the stabilizer bars are, surprisingly, stock but supported by Cusco pillow bushings. The wheels themselves are 17 inches in the front and 16 inches at the rear, rolling on Dunlop Direzza 245/40/17 on the front and 205/50/16 on the rears. For the stopping power, the EG6 is equipped with Endless brakes on the front and rear with Kinokuni brake lines.

After the warm day trackside in Nikko, we thanked Ryo for his time and allowing us to talk to him about his car—the bumblebee that he built. He took offense to that comment, but laughed after I said that when a bee stings, it really does hurt.
