Jonathan Buhler has car-guy blood in his veins. His father bought this ’73 Datsun 240Z back in 1979 from the original owner (the classic first owner tale of a little old lady who only drove it to the corner store and back), and on Jonathan’s 15th birthday passed it down to him since it had been collecting dust in the family garage for eight years. Jonathan’s other ride, a ’94 Supra TT 6-speed, purchased from his uncle in California, recently met a less auspicious end.
When starting to restore the family Z, there weren’t a lot of well-known sources for S30 parts, but thanks to his local Nissan dealership Jonathan was able to put his Z back in tiptop running condition. But, of course, Jonathan had bigger plans than just a basic resto for his Z. “What you see in these pictures is nowhere near the end for this project, but only time and my college budget will tell when it’ll be finished,” he says. “It already has a lot of my blood, sweat and tears rolled into it, and I’m particularly proud of the fact that I’ve kept the original L-series motor in it.” No RB or SR swap for this Z purist, and if you’ve ever heard a modified L24 straight-6 on full song, then you know why Jonathan has decided to keep his in service.
As for his ill-fated Supra, Jonathan tells us, “After getting it off the shipping truck, I started modding it with anything I could get my hands on. I tried not to go overboard, though, keeping the body stock and leaving the stock twins in place, instead going for more of the stance look. I guess I hit the spot because my buddy Mike Burroughs from Stanceworks did a blog feature on it. Sadly, last month I was involved in a pretty bad accident and the Supra is no more. This car really meant a lot to me and to see her gone is heartbreaking.” Hopefully seeing her one last time on the pages of Modified is a suitable farewell.

Why We Picked It
One of the all-time great Japanese sports cars, Jonathan Buhler has done a bang-up job restoring and subtly updating the appearance of his 240Z. Although we’re partial to the bumperless and fender-flared look when it comes to classic Fairladies, a bit of a motorsports-inspired exterior would go nicely with the roll bar and SCCA-spec SU carbs. It’s still tough to fault the clean factory lines and sparking Sunset Orange paint on Jonathan’s Z.
