When a Supra looks this serious, a lot of you are probably thinking it makes 1,000 hp and hails from Texas. Guess again. This Supra is serious for different reasons: the first being its Grim Reaper–approved appearance, the second being the stable of modified Toyotas this turbo JZA80 belongs to (including a track-prepped SW20 MR2 and a lifted 4Runner, both pictured in the sidebar below).
“I grew up during the golden age of Japanese sports cars, where the Mazda RX-7, Nissan 300ZX, Mitsubishi 3000GT and, of course, the Toyota Supra reigned supreme,” Hung Nguyen says. “Then, while attending Virginia Tech and being one of the OG members of the Car Club there, a friend let me drive his modified Supra Turbo and it was game over. I was hooked. As soon as I landed my first job out of school, I bought this ’97 Supra Turbo in April of 2001. The plan was to have a fun street car — something quick yet still achieving near-OEM driveability and reliability.”
To achieve these goals, Hung started the build with a freer-flowing intake, followed by a downpipe, an exhaust and a boost controller. With these simple mods, the car pumped out 416 whp and 410 wtq at the rear wheels on a 50/50 mix of pump gas and 100-octane unleaded, posting a best e.t. at the dragstrip of 12.36 at 122.30 mph on street tires. It wasn’t until 2004, after getting tangled up in a fender bender, that Hung’s Supra underwent a full color change to the Lexus Graphite Gray Pearl you see here. According to Hung, “The look I was going after was what I like to call ‘subtle aggression,’ using mods that aren’t obvious to the casual observer but catch the eye of the true enthusiast. The paint color itself is very near to that of carbon fiber, so it’s not as noticeable that the hood, front bumper accents and centersection of the spoiler are carbon.” Add to that HKS coilovers to set the stance and the “Holy Grail” of SSR wheels (the ultra-rare and discontinued Integral GT2 RS hybrid two-piece rims) to top it off, and you’ve got yourself one seriously hard-looking Supra.
Why We Picked It
What’s not to like about the sinister style of Hung Nguyen’s Mk IV Supra, provided in large part by the Lexus Graphite Gray Pearl paint and Gloss Black SSR rims. Sure, a 6-speed manual gearbox swap and a single turbo conversion would up the ante, but anyone with a blog named hungwin.com and two other modified Toyotas in his stable is all right in our books!
