Loi Song and his team from Sportcar Motion are true enthusiasts, the hardcore types you’ll either find at the track, at a car show or building some of the cleanest and meanest Hondas on the planet out of their San Diego–based tuning shop. Loi has also told us that the Tuner Shootout is his favorite event of the year, and given that his ITR is one of the fastest FWD machines in the country, how could we not have them back for another crack at Shootout glory?
Having run an all-motor K24 last year, SCM improved its performance in every event this year, thanks in part to the 438-whp Kraftwerks supercharged K20 under the hood, further aero and chassis development by Loi and his team, and top quality driving by Oscar Jackson Jr. Although SCM improved its power-under-the-curve score by almost 2,500 points, the Integra still finished last on the dyno, which tells you how crazy the horsepower wars have become at this event. At the dragstrip, Oscar Jackson Jr. peddled the DC2 a full second quicker than it went last year (12.87 versus 13.69), despite getting only three runs on new and unfamiliar tires and with a driver who hadn’t done any drag racing in five years.
Although the SCM Integra is built for time attack and ran strong during that event (almost 2.5 seconds quicker than last year), it was actually the autocross where it shone brightest, scoring an impressive 98.48 points out of a possible 100. According to driver OJR, “Autocross precision is different than road racing and adds a cool dynamic to the Shootout. Oscar Sr. made some small adjustments for the autocross, and the ITR felt surprisingly good on the very tight course. In the real tight sections, the car could have been tuned for a little more oversteer, but with the time attack portion coming up, I wasn’t too concerned about it. I simply drove the car harder on entry. The car was a blast to drive and I had fun.”
