Meet Jackie Estacado, a mafia hitman for the Franchetti crime family. He's about to turn 21 and get an old family gift of power-but not the kind he's expecting. Jackie's new powers turn out to be dark, and more than a little evil; his family calls it "The Darkness." Fortunately for Jackie, he's in a line of work where his new gift comes in handy, especially now that he's decided on a vendetta against the head of the Franchetti crime family-his Uncle Paulie.
The Darkness plays a new role in action games by turning players into a dark horror that lurks in New York City, taking out citizens in grisly, bloody ways. All powers come with a price and in order to feed the Darkness, Jackie must try to stay in the shadows at all times. Like any good demonic-type spirit, when Jackie chomps on a victim, he turns them into an evil demonite whose only job is to serve The Darkness.
To take down enemies, Jackie uses both traditional weapons and his new powers to unleash his wrath in cruel and unusual ways by imploding, impaling or cannibalizing his victims. On his murderous trek to bring down his uncle, Jackie must not only trawl through the seedy streets of New York, but he must also enter the ethereal realm of The Darkness to fight his way through that world as well.
The game's gritty, tough mood can get creepy in a heartbeat, so playing with the lights off is the best way to jump right into the scary atmosphere and keep the adrenaline pumping. The Darkness does a good job of twisting the first-person action horror game around by making players the fiendish monster that lurks in the shadows for victims.
