Raceline USA’s Elton Lo knows a thing or two about track days. He’s raced on more days than he can possibly remember, but beyond that, he’s organized a staggering number of track-oriented events as well. He was undoubtedly the “go-to guy” when we started tinkering with the idea of putting together a Honda Tuning Magazine track series. With a huge helping hand from the good people of Continental Tire, the 1st Annual HT Cup Challenge begins…
There are a number of magazine-based events that take place throughout the year, and some are very successful, but this one is a little different.
First off, unlike many, there are no hired guns for this series. That means if you want your car to compete, you need to pilot your own vehicle. We know driving gurus like Andy Hope and Dr. Tim Kuo are monsters behind the wheel. Put them in the driver’s seat of just about anything, and they’ll run circles around a field of competitors. However, using that same car, put the owner in control, and things tend to even out quickly. On top of bragging rights, the top dogs will also take home a solid cash prize at the finals in August at Buttonwillow Raceway.
The first event was no doubt heated, with many running neck and neck, clawing for top points for the day. In the end, Tony “Why no, ma’am, I’m not Tony Hawk, but I get that all the time” Jackson of Eibach fame came out on top with 25 points, though KJ Valle is right behind him with 20, and HT cover-boy Loi-Spec Hua is gunning for a top spot. Round 2 takes place April 21 at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. There’s still time to jump into the competition!
