Acura NSX Prototype Hits Race Track

Global development expected to begin in 2015 at Honda R&D Americas

Jul 25, 2013

The Details:

• Acura NSX prototype to appear at Mid-Ohio for Honda Indy 200 on August 4th

• Styling and proportions resemble NSX Concept

• Global development expected to begin in 2015

Since 2005, when the last production NSX came into North America, fans of the ever-popular tuner platform have been awaiting the next generation. That time is nearing as global development of the new Acura NSX is planned to begin in 2015. Leading the charge are engineers at Honda R&D Americas, Inc. in Raymond Ohio. This past May, it was announced the next-generation Acura supercar would be produced at the newly established Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio.

The prototype NSX will show its face on the racetrack very soon. It is slated to break cover just before the Honda Indy 200 IndyCar series at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio on August 4, 2013. The race will be broadcast live by NBC Sports Network starting at 3 p.m. EDT.

The NSX Concept, debuted at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, sheds light on the prototype’s styling and proportions. Expect the vehicle's mid-mounted V-6 engine to be mated to Acura's innovative new three-motor Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) system.

As quoted by Motor Trend during the 2012 NSX Concept unveiling, “The NSX will make the driver one with the car to enhance dynamic driving abilities without getting in the way," said Honda CEO Ito. "Like the first NSX, we will again express high performance through engineering efficiency -- but even as we focus on the fun to drive spirit of the NSX, I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities."

For the nostalgic types, take a look down memory lane at a Motor Trend 1991 Acura NSX feature that placed the Japanese supercar against a now very outdated-looking 1991 Lexus LS400. The photos alone are worth a look not to mention the old-school spec sheet below for a car that even decades later still looks futuristic.
