Aston Martin Partners with Mercedes-Benz AMG

The British company will borrow technology from Mercedes for V8 engine development

Aston Martin announced its official move towards a technical partnership with Mercedes-Benz GmbH confirming previous AMG rumblings about such a deal. The partnership will gain Aston Martin access to Mercedes' resources in the development of bespoke V8 engines in addition to the use of electric/electronic components.

Product Development Director at Aston Martin, Ian Minards comments: "We have selected AMG specifically as the basis for this powertrain development process. Aston Martin sources cutting-edge technology from key suppliers around the globe and the opportunity to include content from Mercedes- AMG GmbH in our next generation sports cars is, clearly, good news."

Head of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, Ola Källenius commented: "We are proud to work with Aston Martin and provide them with powertrain and e/e components for their forthcoming sports cars. This is proof of AMG's technological and performance expertise and a real win-win situation for both sides."

Where will Aston Martin place this new engine technology? The Virage, Vantage, Vanquish and Rapid are possible sports car candidates along with a potential new SUV model. As covered by Motor Trend, the 2009 Lagonda concept is on the table for Aston Martin as well. This makes sense at a competition standpoint with recent news of Bentley releasing an SUV for 2016.

Motor Trend also stated in a recent article that the "British marque could pinch downsized engines from Mercedes at some point in the future." This thought was brought on by Aston Martin CEO Ulrich Bez who commented "Four- or even three-cylinders are possible. If the spirit of the times demands six-cylinders, then it has to be looked at."
