Bentley unveiled the new Continental GT3 race car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This Le Mans ready vehicle is powered by a race and dry-sumped version of the 4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with many components carried over from the road-going engine. 600hp is available via a motorsport engine management system and power is transmitted to the rear wheels by an Xtrac six-speed sequential gearbox and limited slip differential. For the best weight distribution, the gearbox is mounted as a transaxle and shifting is completed through a pneumatic shift system controlled by steering wheel paddles.
The GT3s suspension features a wishbone setup front and rear with four-way adjustable racing dampers. The steering system features hydraulic power-assistance for optimal turning power on track. And to stop the 600hp GT3, ventilated iron rotors are slowed by six-piston calipers up front and four-piston calipers to the rear.
Helping aerodynamics is a top-mounted carbon-fiber rear wing and carbon-fiber splitter. Revisions made to the hood, bumpers, fenders and sills both optimize the drag coefficient and help with engine cooling. All of this and more help to bring the GT3's weight down to the race number of 2866 pounds. Now, the GT3 will start its track development program preceding its first competition in the Blancpain Series 2014.
"The Continental GT3 exploits the incredible performance beneath the skin of every Continental GT. We've removed over 1000 kilograms [2204 lbs] of weight, reconfigured our 4.0-litre V8 to produce 600 bhp in race specification, and developed a comprehensive aerodynamic package to ensure that we perform competitively. We are now looking forward to getting the car on the track and proving its potential," stated Member of the Board for Engineering, Rolf Frech.
