The Details:

  • New 170hp 1.8-liter engine replaces previous 2.5-liter engine and ups torque
  • VW Car-Net released for many models
  • New 1.8-liter Beetle engine claimed 17 percent more efficient
  • Beetle R-Line replaces Turbo and GSR SE model released
  • Limited number of 2014 Golf/GTI model sold in U.S.

Volkswagen's 2014 model year lineup includes many changes. The biggest being the switch to a new EA888 1.8-liter turbocharged and direct-injection four-cylinder TSI engine. It replaces the outgoing 2.5- liter five-cylinder engine found in the Jetta, Beetle, and Passat models. The new engine provides the same power output of 170hp as the 2.5-liter engine but ups torque to 184 lb-ft, an increase of seven lb- ft. The power is also delivered lower in the rev range. Expect a claimed 16-17 percent increase in MPG too. Finally, all VW models are now E15 capable and equipped with independent rear suspension.

Aesthetic changes and technological additions are coming for select models as well. One significant technology-based feature is VW Car-Net connectivity, which offers crash notifications, roadside assistance, stolen vehicle location assistance, remote vehicle access, boundary and speed alerts, vehicle health report, and POI service for the navigation unit. All can be used through a smartphone.

Below you will find the highlights to expect with each 2014 model.
