The Sunshine Tour, now in its ninth year, is a yearly celebration of Volkswagen Beetle owners gathering on Europe’s Baltic Sea to enjoy a fun weekend of all things Beetle. This year, old and new Beetles arrived to the private event in record numbers, with 414 counted through the gates.

Attendees love to dress up their Beetles for this event, which featured everything from pick-up trucks, to race versions. But the bell of the ball was a knitted beetle. It belonged to Marthe and Magnus Schwarz from Neustadt/Holstein, Germany who spent seven months creating it from more than 80 lb of wool. It won the ‘most beautiful’ award. Although the design was eye-catching, it left us wondering how well the material holds up in wet weather.

Some Beetle owners wore costumes to match their car. This year a glam Beetle, rock ’n roll Beetle, as well as wedding, beach, 007 and Charleston-themed Beetle were among the hundreds of custom cars in attendance.

The event also showcased the new VW iBeetle, which made its European premiere at the event. It was presented by VW alongside the Beetle Cabrio Exclusive and Beetle GSR – a limited edition of only 3500 vehicles.
