Earlier this month, Jaguar released the first official teaser image of its C-X17 concept, which revealed Jaguar’s first foray into the CUV/SUV segment. Today, Jaguar has finally unveiled its first ever highly anticipated sports crossover concept vehicle – the C-X17 at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Jaguar is using the C-X17 as a guinea pig to test out its all-new advanced aluminum architecture, which will be the new platform on which future Jaguars will be built. Land Rover, which happens to be Jaguar’s sister company, recently began implementing aluminum architecture, starting with the new 2014 Range Rover Sport, which was Land Rover’s first car to feature an all-new aluminum unibody. As a result, the new Sport’s weight was reduced by 800lbs. Jaguar’s F-Type as well as various other Jaguar models are made of aluminum, so what makes this new technology special? According to Jaguar, the advanced aluminum architecture is high-strength, lightweight, extremely stiff and incorporates innovative efficiency technologies.

“The C-X17 sports crossover represents an exciting new direction for Jaguar. Its purpose is to highlight our all-new aluminum architecture. With this technical foundation, we will dramatically expand Jaguar's product offering, market potential and customer appeal. This new philosophy will bring technology from our top-of-the-range products into new growing premium segments, and when combined with our new ultra-efficient engines, we will set a global standard. Add to these rational values, the class-leading dynamics, and the beauty and purity of form that Jaguar is renowned for, and we have the formula for a monumental leap forward.”
Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director, Jaguar

And if you’re wondering what you’ll find under the hood of these future Jaguars, we’ll tell you right now. The range of engine outputs for Jaguar vehicles featuring the advanced aluminum body will include all-new four-cylinder diesel and gasoline engines, and the powerful V6 engine seen in the Jaguar F-TYPE sports car. These engines will allow top speeds of over 186mph, as well as lower emissions.

The C-X17 concept in particular, is equipped with an All-Wheel Drive system, driving modes such as Road, Sport or All-Road, and a low-sitting stance, which pretty much rules out the possibility of going on any off-road excursions. It also comes with 23in alloy wheels, LED headlamps, J-shaped running lights and frosted-glass foglights set into the large front intakes, and a grille is inspired by the XJ.

The interior features four individual bucket seats, and two leisure seats finished in Connolly saddle leather that swing up and out of the cargo area floor for use when the car is stopped and the rear hatch opened. The C-X17 also comes equipped with an Interactive Surface Console made up of interconnecting touch screens, which allow the occupants of the vehicle to interact with one another via an in-car Wi-Fi network. This sounds like a useful tool for the soccer moms that want to keep little Johnny and Sally entertained.
