With the era of one well-known BMW ending, the dawn of a new era begins. The all-new 2014 BMW 428i and 435i convertibles will land of US soil and into dealerships in the first quarter of 2014. But these are not your ordinary convertible cars, these are equipped with some of the world's most advanced technologies and features.

The 428i is equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an available 240hp (at 5000-6500rpm) and 255 lb-ft of torque (between 1250-4800rpm). 0-60mph is achieved in a claimed 6.2sec with an electronically limited top speed of 155mph, when equipped with summer performance tires. The engine technology package for the 428i includes High Precision Direct Injection, twin-scroll turbocharging, Double-VANOS variable camshaft control and Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology. This ensures a balance between high-performance and energy efficiency.

The 435i is equipped with a 3.0L, aluminum crankcase engine capable of producing 300hp (between 5800-6000rpm) and 300 lb-ft of torque (at 1200-5000rpm). 0-60mph is achieved in a claimed 5.5sec with an electronically limited top speed of 155mph, when equipped with performance tires.

Both models utilize a standard 8-speed sport automatic transmission.

To stop the new 4-Series convertibles are standard swing-caliper or fixed-caliper brakes and large, inner-vented brake discs. At the front, the brakes are made from aluminum, while the pads feature a standard Brake Dying function. M Sport Brakes (more on the M Sport version to come) are available for the more sport oriented. Included in the M package are aluminum fixed calipers (four-piston front and two-piston rear) and large discs that combine low weight and incredible stopping power (stand-alone option on the 435i and an upgrade on the 428i). This also includes calipers painted in blue.

18in wheels are standard on both the 428i and 435i, while in the Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport offer optional 19in light-alloy wheels (435i only). The M Sport rims are finished in an M design as well.

The 428i is offered with the choice of rear-wheel drive or the optional xDrive, BMW's intelligent all-wheel drive system. The 435i will be available, at first, with rear-wheel drive. On the M Sport package, M Sport suspension is available (rear-wheel drive models only). Also available is the Variable Sport steering option, as part of the Dynamic Handling Package.

Aluminum torque struts, wishbones and swivel bearings reduce unsprung weight. The front suspension combines maximum stiffness and minimum weight, while engineers optimized the kinematics of the double-pivot suspension for agility and precision. An additional strut between the front axle subframe and body sill creates an even stiffer ride. At the rear, features a five-link concept. Its elastokinematics have been tuned specially for this model. Adding to the sporty and dynamic nature of the new 4-Series are extra-wide mounts and supports on the wheels carriers for track and camber, slightly repositioned pivot points, stiff control arms and suspension subframes and thrust arms, connecting the suspension with the body.

A longer wheelbase, wider track and lower ride height set the 4-Series apart from the previous generation 3-Series convertible. The suspension is lower as a result bringing the cars center of gravity closer to the ground for a more sporty driving experience. Because of the cars sophisticated chassis technology, a perfect 50:50 weight distribution is achieved through many factors including lightweight construction.

The length has been increased by only one inch (182.6in), widened by 1.7in (71.9in), added 2in to the wheelbase (110.6in) and as a result has increased the front track by 1.8in (60.8in) and at the rear axle 3.1in (62.7in) of width has been added. This further distinguishes the 4-Series form its 3-Series predecessor.

Although most aspects of the new 4-Series convertibles remain true to the BMW lineup, some changes and additions have been made to set the new 4s apart from the rest. Air Breathers positioned rearwards of the front wheel arches are a new element used to reduce drag.

The hard top is a three-piece retractable feature that offers ample space when in an out of the trunk. 13.0 cu ft is available with the top up (0.7 cu ft more than 3-Series convertible) and when the top is down, 7.8 cu ft is available, thanks to an electro-hydrolic loading assistance system, ensuring maximum space while enjoying some fresh air.

And speaking of fresh air, the three-piece retractable top is able to go from closed to open in just 20sec at speeds of up to 11mph. Air resistance is also improved when the top is up with Cd 0.28 and Cd 0.33 when the top is down.

The Sport Line features high-gloss black sections of the car along with black exhaust tips. The Luxury line features high-gloss chrome touches over some of the exterior with 11 kidney grille slats compared to the Sport Line's nine. The chrome theme continues onto the exhaust tips. The M Sport features an aerodynamic package, which includes a front apron with large air intakes, rear bumper with a diffuser and side skirts. And exclusive to the M Sport 4-Series convertible is an Estoril Blue Metallic paint color.

The interior features a two-tone effect in bright color combinations. Electrically adjustable seats and integrated seat belts increases ease and comfort. Optional sport seats are available with recessed head restraints and can also be equipped with neck warmers, available in the cold weather package.

The Sport Line package includes black and red accents throughout the interior provide a performance look. Sport seats are included along with available Coral Red interior. The Luxury Line package is more the opposite with high-gloss wood strips and the choice of two upholstery variants. Other finishes such as Ash Grain anthracite and Pearl Gloss Chrome metal inlay complete the look. M Sport features M finishes including door sills, leather steering wheel and driver’s footrest.

Technological features are plentiful and most are seen on most any other BMW model. These include: ConnectedDrive (available as standard or optional under the BMW ConnectedDrive banner), with navigation and various driving assistance elements, and more.

Various drive modes are offered including ECO PRO, COMFORT, SPORT or SPORT + (in most models). If one of these driving modes is selected, unique settings for powertrain and suspension components will be activated.

Various safety features are available, including: eCall with enhanced Automatic Collision Notification and BMW Teleservice, full-view Head-Up display, Active Driving Assistant and more. Each individually assists the driver in the all-important task of driving safely while predicting road conditions ahead.

Coming to the US in a little over a year’s time, the all-new 2014 BMW 4-Series convertibles will start at $49675 (428i) and $55825 (435i) both including $925 destination and handling.
