After exorcising some demons early in the season, Mazdaspeed and SpeedSource Engineering have tallied wins at Road Atlanta, Detroit, and Mid-Ohio to jump within four points of the Grand-Am GX Manufacturers Championship.
The GX class is designated for alterative fuel and technology cars, and Mazda has fielded all-new Mazda6 racers with the Skyactiv-D diesel engine providing the thrills. The new engine is a true production-based engine with a 51 percent stock-by-parts count and a 63 percent stock-by-weight. Mazda chose this path, as it is the most honest way to demonstrate the quality, durability, and reliability of Mazda cars.
“For those who know racing, scoring a win in the first year of a program is never an easy task,” said John M. Doonan, director, Mazda Motorsports, Mazda North American Operations. “To take three in a row, this early in the development, is very special. We’ve still got a long way to go with the Mazda6 Skyactiv-D clean diesel program, but it’s wonderful to see Sylvain and Tom score their first win with the car.
