2015 BMW M4 Coupe Details:

BMW is well known for its "The Ultimate Driving Machine" tagline and the M division is the epitome of that mantra. Now the heritage of M cars adds one more to the lineup. Introducing the M4 Coupe, a model rich in style and performance meant for street and track use. The M4 is a signal to what the future holds for the M division. A four-door 2015 BMW M3 Sedan will also be available.
"Four generations of the BMW M3 have blended motorsport genes and uncompromised everyday usability within an emotionally rich overall concept," explains Dr Friedrich Nitschke, President BMW M GmbH. "The BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe represent an ongoing commitment to this philosophy. The new turbocharged six-cylinder unit fitted in the two new cars combines the virtues of a high-revving naturally aspirated unit with the strengths of turbocharger technology. A committed lightweight design concept produces a weight saving of around 80 kilograms (176 lb) over the outgoing M3."
The M4 will feature a 3.0L inline 6-cylinder engine claimed to reach 425hp from 5500- 7300rpm and 406 lb-ft of torque from 1850-5500rpm. It will reach 0-60mph in 3.9sec when equipped with the M-DCT transmission, as claimed by BMW. With the standard six-speed manual it will hit 0-60mph in a slightly slower 4.1sec. The M4 engine is also 22 lb lighter than its V8 predecessor, while fuel consumption and emissions is shaved by nearly 25 percent. The M4 Coupe is able to reach an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
The M4 Coupe is mated to either a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional 7-Speed M Double Clutch transmission. The six-speed is equipped with a double-plate clutch. The gearbox is more compact than its predecessor and 26.4 lb lighter. For improved shifting, the six-speed uses a new carbon friction lining in its synchronizer rings. Expect throttle blips on downshifts too, a feature only previously seen on the 7- Speed M Double Clutch transmission.
The optional 7-Speed M Double Clutch with Drivelogic provides the driver with uninterrupted flow of power. Launch control is integrated and provides optimum sprinting performance off the line. Stability Clutch Control opens the clutch during understeer to bring it back into line. Drivelogic modes provides the driver with optional comfort, economy or sport selections to choose from.
The M4 is of course rear-wheel drive. The hollow lightweight output shafts of the rear differential and Active M Differential optimize traction and directional stability.
The electromachanical steering system offers direct feel and precise feedback. The integrated Servtronic function electronically adjusts the level of steering assistance according to the car's speed. Three driver setting come standard: Comfort, Sport, and Sport +.
"Together, the rigid front and rear structures, precise axle kinematics and an impressively responsive electromechanical power steering system help to deliver the outstanding steering and handling characteristics of the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe," says Albert Biermann, Head of Development BMW M GmbH.
The M4 is both track and street ready. This is made most evident by the track-specification cooling system, ensuring optimum temperature balance between the engine, turbochargers and transmission. This also comprises a water cooler repositioned to the side of the high and low-temperature water circuits and the engine transmission oil (if the M Double Clutch Transmission is specified).
The exhaust utilizes an innovative flap arrangement. The electronically controlled flaps placed before the rear silencer minimizes exhaust backpressure and produces the recognizable M sound. The different selectable drive modes also feature different engine sound profiles.
"When developing a new model we first think about what requirements the vehicle will be expected to meet, and then decide which concepts and technologies will best meet these goals," says Biermann.
The M4 Coupe comes standard with M compound brakes designed to be lighter than conventional equivalents. The BMW M carbon ceramic brakes can be selected as an option with the additional visual highlight of gold-painted calipers.
WHEELS AND TIRES:
The M4 will leave the factory with low-weight 18in forged wheels (9x18" f and 10x18" r) with mixed-size tires (10" f and 10.8" r). 19" wheels and tires are available as an option in either Ferric Grey or Black, as well.
The suspension of the M4 features lightweight and intelligent construction. The double-joint spring strut front axle features the use of aluminum for components such as the control arms, wheel carriers and axle subframes. This saves 11 lb over conventional steel.
Developed especially for the M4, the play-free ball joints and elastomeric bearings ensure optimum and direct transfer of forces both laterally and longitudinally. Further assisting in increasing rigidity of the front end is the aluminum stiffening plate, carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFPR) front strut brace and additional bolted joints between the axle and subframe and body structure. Improved on the last generation M3 is the new five-link rear axle.
The optional M Suspension comes with three modes: Comfort, Sport, and Sport +.
"The double-elastic mounting for the rear differential within the rear axle subframe - which is bolted to the body structure - has allowed us to achieve a new level of driving precision, but without neglecting comfort," says Biermann.
AERO AND WEIGHT SAVINGS:
According to BMW, weight savings of around 176 lb is achieved thanks to intelligent lightweight design measures including the use of CFRP and aluminum for a number of chassis and body components plus an exposed carbon-fiber roof. This puts the curb weight of the M4 Coupe around 3300 lb.
The front apron, smooth underbody, and integrated spoiler lip at the rear reduce lift at the front and rear axle. The air curtain and M grilles with integrated air breather minimize turbulence in the front wheel arches.
"The way in which we channel the inflowing air through the engine oil cooler creates a Venturi effect, which reduces front axle lift and, in so doing, improves the steering," explains Biermann.
While the M4 leans towards classic BMW design, there are several M specific touches that set the M4 apart. The twin headlight arrangement has been updated (with optional LED) and the distinctive twin-bar kidney grille with black painted bars lends to the M lineup. The front apron with its trio of large intakes in addition to the power dome on the hood lend to the motorsports heritage of the M. The exterior mirrors not only add a new styling feature but also improve aerodynamics.
The dark color of the CFRP roof gives a more sporty and compact appearance especially with exposed carbon-fiber. The rear-integrated spoiler is made from lightweight carbon-fiber as well and is a standalone design element to the M4.
Flared wheel arches and the cars wide track lend to the aggressive nature of the M4 while the quad exhaust gives the rear its signature M look.
The interior features M specific design cues including: M door sills, M driver footrest, M gearshift lever, M-design circular instruments with white graphics, M leather steering wheel with chrome trim and color contrast stitching with electroplated-look shift paddles if the M-DCT gearbox is chosen.
While the bucket seats are sport oriented, they can be equipped with comfort-enhancing features including electric adjustment and heating. Stitching, upholstery segmentation and perforation offer a sportier feel, while the M logo is added to the backrests for the first time.
The BMW M4 Coupe will debut at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Sales will begin in Summer 2014. This will be the first time the Coupe will be introduced along side the four-door M3 variant. While pricing has not yet been announced, knowing past price points of M models, we can assume it wont be lower than the $60000 range.
