There are few in motor racing history that stir the worldwide emotions of fans to the degree of famed F1 driver, James Hunt. Recently, fans and movie junkies alike witnessed one of the better Hollywood racing films of our time: RUSH. Although only actors played the famous duo of Hunt and Niki Lauda, viewers were mesmerized by the incredible story. For some, just watching a film or clips on YouTube isn't enough.

Recently, the same Bell helmet Hunt wore in his 1976 Formula 1 world championship season went up for sale. How much would you pay for this incredible piece of history? One lucky buyer purchased the helmet for $61430 from Bonhams auctions.

A 1975 Snell number A463638 helmet complete with clear visor and fitted cir-clips, is adorned with the famous three-colored stripes (red, blue, and yellow) and drivers name (in white) with Goodyear, Marlboro and Texaco sponsor logos. As would be expected, some of the foam lining is now brittle and loose, while the Velcro strip and flameproof collar are still present. During this time, Bell was experimenting with narrow view helmets and this can be easily recognized as one. There is a hole drilled to the right of the chin guard for water access via a metal tube. A microphone mesh is also fitted inside the chin guard.

Whether you agree or disagree with the helmet's selling price there is no denying Hunt's lasting impression on F1 now shared with the masses thanks to Hollywood. We wonder what other motorsports artifacts the buyer has collected if willing to spend the price of a luxury sedan on a famed lid.
