Rumblings about an all-new Supra are rolling in like waves upon the beach. In recent issues, we have had news about a Toyota/BMW partnership saying, "The scenarios are sketchy at this point, having the new car based on the GT86, via an elongated body, with BMW four-cylinder power, possibly a turbo four. This 'long body' reference could be a test mule or possibly hint at the future direction of the car."
We have also referenced the new Supra being more homegrown, based on the Lexus FT-HS Concept but still in partnership with the boys from Bavaria. We noted, "Where the AE86 Corolla was the inspiration for the FR-S/BRZ, the BMW collaboration seems to be using the Supra as a barometer. While it is unclear if the FT-HS Concept will play a part in the design process, we can't wait to see this cross-pollination experiment bare fruit."
The latest high tide brings us more commentary that the Toyota/BMW joint may wear a Supra nameplate. We hear a BMW Z4 platform could be used, and the FT-HS concept is still a possible design direction. Additional buzz indicates a more Supra-esque concept could appear at the Tokyo Motor Show. Stay tuned.
