Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Details:
Those buying S-Class luxury do so not to feel the road but to own it. For many, the model line is synonymous with big business luxury and cutting-edge technology. After the recent release of the four-door 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, German competitor Mercedes-Benz retaliated with a sedan-sized VIP tourer qualified to battle a next-gen M6. The new S-Class Coupe will first premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show from March 6-16th before the S550 Coupe 4Matic becomes available in the US later this fall.
The US will be receiving only the S550 Coupe with 4Matic and a 4.7L V8 biturbo engine that outputs a total of 449hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. While first drive performance numbers are to be determined, consider the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 featured a similar 4.7L V8 biturbo that reached 0-60mph in 4.8sec, as claimed by the manufacturer.
Driver aid technology is at the forefront of the latest S-Class Coupe design. A new curve tilting function allows the vehicle to lean into a corner in similar fashion as a motorcyclist. This is the first time this technology has been seen in a series-production car. Its goal is to enhance comfort and decrease lateral force felt by occupants when entering a fast bend – not increase cornering speed.
“The world premiere of the active curve tilting function demonstrates the possibilities offered by Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive,” said Prof Dr Thomas Weber, member of the board of management of Daimler AG with responsibility for corporate research and Mercedes-Benz Cars development. “The vehicle leans into bends much like a motorcyclist, thereby reducing the lateral acceleration acting on the vehicle's occupants. On country roads in particular, this means greater driving pleasure and ride comfort.”
Active Body Control suspension then further improves handling by way of hydraulic cylinders equipped on the individual struts. The result is a balance of pressure on said strut that works with the curve tilting function. When entering a corner, the curve tilting function changes the base point of each strut to decrease feedback felt in cabin for a smoother ride. The vehicle can then incline automatically and continuously at fractions of a second and up to an angle of 2.5 degrees in curves. The vehicle receives corner data up 49 feet ahead thanks to a stereo camera behind the windscreen and transversal acceleration sensor. The curve tilting function is included as one of three drive modes.
An assortment of driver aids common to the S-Class Sedan will be also available in the two-door variant. “Intelligent Drive” aids include brake assistance, pedestrian awareness and cross-traffic detection, adaptive high beams and night-view options, active lane sharing and steering assists, and of course numerous “Pre-Safe” auto-respond precautions to avoid collision.
For improved visibility and style, an eyebrow of LED daytime running lights above the main headlamp were refined with a semi-circular counter-curve. Optional expressive headlights, each featuring 47 Swarovski crystals, is a perfect example to the premier quality infused into this vehicle. Also, helping distinguish this new model are the two horizontal rows of LEDs in the rear light assembly.
You will notice smooth bodylines and frameless doors running across the long profile for improved aero and modern styling. 18 to 20” wheels complement the long hood and low greenhouse. Rear license plate mounting is moved to the lower portion of the two-part bumper for a sleeker trunk lid. Integrated into the bumper is a high-sheen black diffuser framed by the tailpipes. Total wheelbase is 198” long with a width of 75” and height of 56”.
Once inside, the new S-Class Coupe boasts a standard panorama roof that extends over two-thirds of the total roof area – it appears a claimed 150 percent larger than its predecessor. “Magic Sky Control” allows the driver to lighten or darken the transparency of the roof with a button push. At full dark, the panorama roof allows less than 1 percent of light in – a roller blind is also available.
Modern interior luxury continues to the display-rich cockpit. New interior colors such as Bengal red, saddle brown and porcelain are available for increased personalization. The main two-part TFT display sits in front of the trim surface for ease of use. Leather adorns everything from the seats to the center console that extends into the rear. In front of the armrest lies new model standard touchpad. Like a smartphone, it gains you access to all head-unit functions by way of finger gestures and also accepts typing in multiple languages. Multi-media controls for the Burmester surround sound system are placed in a semicircle in front of the central control unit. Exterior exhaust notes can also be softened or loudened thanks to exhaust flaps for complete interior sound control – of course a higher performance comes when the flaps are open.
An optional head-up display (HUD) places important data points into the driver’s field of vision. The specular optics and full-color display fires speed, navigation and driver assist data onto the windscreen at a resolution of 480 x 240 pixels. A light sensor at the top edge of the roof automatically adjusts brightness of the estimated 8” x 3”-sized HUD.
Unquestionably, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe will offer driver and occupants a cutting edge ride around town, in the canyons or across a longer journey.
