Hennessey Venom GT Hits 270.49 MPH (w/video)

The unofficial World's Fastest Car

Hennessey Venom GT Details:

  • Unofficial fastest car in world
  • Florida's Kennedy Space Station used for record
  • 2 miles needed to reach speed on 3.2 mile runway
  • 1244hp platform built by American tuner

Since day one the Hennessey Venom GT's mission has been to dethrone the mighty Bugatti Veyron as the world's fastest production car. The tuner car did just that last April, but the authority that makes such records official, the Guinness Book of World Records, didn't recognize the run for various reasons. That hasn't stopped Hennessey from going out and breaking its last record, as this video shows the car hitting 270 mph.

The video starts with President John F. Kennedy's famous moon speech, which is fitting considering the run was conducted at Florida's Kennedy Space Center. The test session was carried out on February 14, 2014, following aerodynamic verification of the CFD model. In the video, the Venom GT accelerates past the 200-mph mark and keeps climbing rapidly until about 250 mph. After that, the miles tick by a bit slower, but in a few seconds the car hits an indicated 270 mph and backs off. Hennessey claims a VBOX-verified top speed of 270.49 mph.

The test session was conducted on the Shuttle Landing Facility's 3.2-mile runway, and given that the previous 265.7-mph run required two whole miles to hit that speed, it's likely that test driver Brian Smith let off to give the car enough room to slow down. HPE founder John Hennessey has said in the past that the car could theoretically top out at 275 mph if given the same 5.6-mile stretch the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport had for its record-setting run.

Though it ultimately won't earn it a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records, the 1244-hp supercar's run is still impressive. Check out the full video below.
