New Audi TT Details:

  • World debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show
  • Designers take inspiration from first model generation
  • Audi virtual cockpit and Matrix LED headlights are among technical highlights
  • The Audi rings will appear on the hood for the first time, a la R8

What's old is new again. Totally pithy comment, for reals, but when it comes to the next generation Audi TT sports coupe - which is headed for its big global reveal March 3 at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show - it's sort of true. Audi designers contend the new TT rekindles the appearance of the iconic first-gen version.

In fact the third generation is both looking backwards and forward, calling on its first iteration for many design cues, such as its bubble roofline for the cockpit. They've also returned to a slatted grille, a design that was abandoned for the honeycomb style on the single frame grilles of the Mk2 TT.

For the first time, the Audi rings will appear on the contoured hood, a la R8. Vertical struts now divide the large air intakes in the front spoiler, switching from the horizontal dividers of the current cars. The motif is repeated in the headlights, with the vertical divider acting as reflectors for the DRLs.

Of course, the car will be offered with optional LED technology, including its Matrix LED system that generates the high beam (although we've yet to hear if this will be offered in the US on all cars).

As with the two previous generations, the flanks have pronounced fender flares, although these will be more prominent than on the Mk2. The top of the front flares will intersect the clamshell hood line, with this line carried down the side of the car to the rear light clusters.

The C pillar has a slight kink, designed to create tension at the rear, giving the impression of stored energy. Further back the rear lights have the same dividers as the headlamps and the two clusters are joined by the third brake light that traverses the width of the car across the tailgate. Regular versions of the TT will get two round tailpipes framed by a diffuser, while the TTS model gets four tips.

The interior is said to incorporate several new Audi technologies and incorporate new design elements, but we'll reserve judgment until seeing the first official photos.
