After winning two rounds of the 2014 Global Rallycross (GRC) season in the Number 7 7UP VW Polo, piloted by Scott Speed, the brand is proud to unveil its definitive VW Beetle GRC racecar. Tanner Foust and Scott Speed will race the 544hp VW Beetle in later rounds of this GRC season. Rally fans will be able to see the new Volkswagen though at this weekend’s Washington DC GRC round.

A 1.6-liter four-cylinder TSI turbocharged engine that propels the all-wheel drive platform from 0-60mph in a staggering 2.1sec powers the VW Beetle GRC. The third gen VW Beetle utilizes a 6-speed transmission, with a fixed-ratio AWD that features multiplate limited-slip differentials front and rear.

All-around strut-type suspension, with ZF dampers and an estimated 9.1 inches of travel will allow the Volkswagen to handle the stress of rally racing. Slowing the VW Beetle GRC are 14in front and 11.8in rear vented disc brakes and 4-piston aluminum calipers. 40/640-R17 Yokohama competition tires wrap the 17in wheels. At 168.8in long and 71.7in wide, this latest GRC entry must weigh in at a minimum of 2668 lb – for reference, the 2014 VW Beetle 2.0 R-Line hatch has a curb weight of 3104 lb, according to Motor Trend.

“The Polo has already proved super-competitive,” said Scott Speed, “and we are really looking forward to racing a car that has been engineered specifically by Volkswagen Motorsport for GRC competition.” Tanner Foust added, “I know I can’t wait to race the No. 34 Rockstar Energy Drink Beetle. There’s no cooler looking car in the series.”

Jost Capito, Volkswagen Motorsport director, said, “After Volkswagen of America’s impressive start on the rallycross scene with the Polo, the launch of the new Beetle GRC rallycross car represents the next major milestone. The Beetle boasts a unique appearance and state-of-the-art technology. It will sweep fans off their feet.”
