Still not greenlit for production because a price under $30,000 may not be possible

Bad news for fans of the Nissan IDx concept; Nissan Americas’ Vice President for product planning Pierre Loing says the company is having trouble keeping the price of a production IDx under $30,000. If the cost dilemma can't be overcome, the IDx may not be greenlit.

The IDx, a compact rear-wheel-drive sports coupe, was revealed at the 2013 Tokyo auto show to much celebration among enthusiasts. After the reveal, an ongoing rumor surfaced that the IDx would see production to battle the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. This rumor has found many supporters. Though the concept was a mishmash of existing Nissan parts, a production IDx would ideally be powered by a small turbocharged four-cylinder ranging in displacement from 1.2 to 1.6 liters and making between 200 and 250 horsepower.

Despite the IDx's large number of supporters, its future is currently uncertain. Chief among production barriers is the potential cost of the rear-drive platform. “It’s not easy to do, [and] if you do something like this and you manage to do a vehicle at [a low] price, what else would you do on this platform? Because frankly to do a platform for 50,000 or 60,000 [units] a year -- it’s not worth it,” Loing told WardsAuto.
