JDM Subaru WRX S4 Details
Details of the Japanese-market Subaru WRX S4 have been revealed. The car will use a high-performance version of the standard model's 2.0-liter direct-injection turbo flat-four engine making 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque -- 28 hp and 37 lb-ft more than the U.S.-spec WRX and 9 hp and 5 lb-ft less than our WRX STI with the turbo 2.5-liter engine.
According to the automaker, the S4 nomenclature refers to the new model’s four values: sports performance, safety performance, smart driving, and sophisticated feel. The tweaked turbo 2.0-liter makes peak power at 5600 rpm, and produces its 295 lb-ft of torque from 2000 to 4800 rpm. The Subaru WRX S4 comes exclusively with the automaker’s Sport Lineartronic CVT, and of course, the powertrain routes power to all four wheels via Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel drive system.
The Subaru WRX S4 sedan features a stiffened chassis and retuned suspension, while the electric power steering system gets more rigid steering gear box mounts. Subaru also gave the WRX S4 a new Multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) and Active Torque Vectoring. The changes are said to raise the cornering limit and quicken vehicle response to steering inputs. A new electric parking brake is a WRX first.
The new WRX S4 is the first WRX model to feature the automaker’s advanced EyeSight safety technologies including Active Lane Keep steering assist, Pre-Collision Reverse Throttle Management and Brake Light Recognition. Other safety features include Pre-Collision Braking Control and Adaptive Cruise Control.
Outside, the Subaru WRX S4 features new lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels and LED lighting front and rear. Inside, the all-black interior features red stitching, carbon trim panels, metal trim accents, and piano black surfaces. Other interior styling includes a flat-bottom steering wheel, leather-wrapped shifter boot, and sport seats.
