2014 Rolls-Royce Phantom Metropolitan Details
The folks at the Rolls-Royce Bespoke division have outdone themselves again. Appearing at the Paris auto show is the Rolls-Royce Phantom Metropolitan Collection that showcases impressive marquetry work, which is the art if wood inlaying.
Rolls-Royce has showed off wood-inlayed art in the past, but the Phantom Metropolitan Collection is on another level. The art pieces are inspired by city skylines and are found on the wood accents on the dashboard and the two fold-away picnic tables in the rear passenger area. Approximately 500 pieces of precisely cut wood veneer are needed to complete one design. Each piece of wood is color- adjusted before going through an inspection under a magnified light box.
That said, each art piece is unique, offering a birds-eye view of cityscapes from around the world. Designers continued the city-inspired theme with skyscrapers embroidered on the seat backs as well as skyline graphics painted on the exterior C-pillar. Other touches include a clock with a bezel featuring 24 cities, Aetherius Grey leather and Darkest Tungsten exterior paint. Customers, of course, can customize their Phantom however they want.
Rolls-Royce says only 20 copies of the Phantom Metropolitan Collection will be made and it’s doubtful the automaker will have any issues selling these rolling pieces of art.
