The 2016 Volkswagen Golf R stole the show at VW's L.A. auto show press conference. As we previously reported, the hot hatch will have a starting price of $37,415 (including $820 destination charge). VW officials announced on Wednesday that the 2016 Volkswagen Golf R will arrive in America next February.
The all-wheel-drive R has captivated V-Dub fans with its 2.0-liter direct injection turbocharged engine that promises nearly 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. In person, the car is much more stylish and the interior appears refined and properly leather-encased.
The R is just one of many variants of the Golf, whose range also includes gas, diesel, CNG and electric versions -- though the R might be the most fun.
Motor Trend Editor-in-Chief Ed Loh joined VW officials during the carmaker's press conference to congratulate VW on the Golf family winning Motor Trend's 2015 Car of the Year award.
While Volkswagen has seen its sales slump this year, executives said they think the company is through the toughest part and is already showing signs of a strong recovery.
"Sales were up in October and we expect this trend to continue through next year," said VW's North American CEO Michael Horn. The company plans on capturing more customers with improved crossovers and its strong lineup of cars.
