When he announced his retirement from professional drifting back in 2011, twice Formula Drift (FD) champion Tanner Foust left a bit of wiggle room in case he ever decided he wanted to come back to the motorsport that brought him his initial fame. Well it appears that time has finally come - Rockstar Energy Drink made it official via press release, announcing the racecar pilot and TV host will be returning to FD for select rounds of the 2015 season, and he'll be doing it behind the wheel of a 900-horsepower Volkswagen Passat.
Foust will make his first appearance at the Long Beach season opener April 10 and 11, and plans to also compete at Round 2, Road Atlanta in May and Round 7, Irwindale Speedway in October. Virtually no details were revealed about the car the VW works hot-shoe will be campaigning other than what we've already mentioned, but what is clear is Foust's busy 2015, which also includes stints in Global Rallycross, the FIA World Rallycross Championship and Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, as well as hosting duties on the History Channel's Top Gear, which just wrapped its fifth season.
"I'm going back to my roots with drifting, racing in rallycross, scraping the rust off some road racing skills, and continuing to learn more about off-road racing," said Foust. "For me, it's important to stay in touch with these different disciplines - especially as I'm working with Volkswagen on developing some exciting new project cars."
Formula D super-fans will remember Foust as the only champion to win back-to-back titles in the pro drift series, in 2007 and 2008. He did five seasons with Papadakis Racing, first in a Nissan 350Z and then in a RWD-converted Scion tC, before Nordic Drift Champion Fredric Aasbo replaced him in 2011. More details on the 2015 Rockstar Energy Drink Volkswagen Passat drift car will be available in the coming weeks.
