In 2014 Formula Drift (FD) began a partnership with Irwindale Speedway, home of the final round of the FD pro drifting championship, to open up the historic short oval one Thursday night a month to allow for pros, pro-ams and enthusiasts to come out and practice their sideways driving skills. Well, the popular event series will be back for 2015, the league and speedway announcing recently a new batch of once-a-month test and tunes.
In the past Thursday Night Drift has attracted Formula D mainstays like Dai Yoshihara, Mike Essa, Ken Gushi, Joon Maeng, and Kyle Mohan, among others. It was also not uncommon for the pros to bring out their competition cars, but more times than not they used their personal "missile" drift cars to get loose.
In fact it could be said that the real treat was for those enthusiasts and privateers who got to share the legendary "House Of Drift" asphalt with the pros. After all, to those who love drifting Irwindale is hallowed ground. It is literally the birthplace of the sport in this country dating back to the first D1 USA event in 2003 and has been the site of every FD season finale since the birth of the series.
If you want to watch the pros practice, scout future Formula D talent, or get in on the action yourself, Thursday Formula Drift Practice Nights will take place on the following dates: March 12th, April 2nd, May 14th, June 11th, July 19th, August 13th, September 10th, October 1st, November 12th, and concluding on December 10th. Drivers looking to practice need only drop $75 to get on track (with tech approval) and spectator tickets are only 10 bucks, which includes access to the pits.
