Winter will have officially faded into memory by next week, but drifting champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. has one more surprise for us. In a new video, Gittin reveals his all-new 2015 Ford Mustang RTR livery while drifting on the ice-covered Warners Lake in East Berne, N.Y.
From the outside, the Monster Energy Nitto Tire Mustang featured in the video boasts huge green wheels, a red spoiler, and plenty of stickers, but inside houses a Ford Racing-modified 5.0-liter V-8 engine paired with a close-ratio six speed manual transmission. To help Gittin take command of the ice, the sub-3000-pound machine uses hearty tires. Designers installed over 800 studs into each Nitto tire by hand, giving the car some amazing grip on the icy surface.
But this wasn't just any typical track adventure for Gittin. "This was my first time ever driving on studs, let alone drifting on ice. Not to mention I was behind the wheel of our one-of-a-kind prototype competition car, so there was no pressure to not destroy the car or anything!" he said in a statement.
In related news, Ford continues to expand its involvement in pro drifting, returning as an official partner of FD with the introduction of the new Formula DRIFT Media Center Powered by Ford Performance. The automaker will have significant presence at events with displays in the vendor paddock and signage throughout venues. Ford will also continue to support drivers Vaughn Gittin, Jr., the 2010 Formula Drift champion, and Justin Pawlak.
